Determinants of the lost to follow-up status among patients with tuberculosis who emigrated to the Republic of Korea
Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health concern, with foreign migrants in the Republic of Korea (ROK) representing a particularly vulnerable group; despite comprising only 3.5% of the population, they account for over 5% of annual TB cases and exhibit disproportionately high rates of lost to follow up (LTFU) from treatment compared to native Koreans. This mixed-methods study aimed to identify key factors influencing no…
Identifying Predictors of Unfavorable Treatment Outcomes in Tuberculosis Patients
Our study identified several factors contributing to unfavorable treatment outcomes in tuberculosis patients, including male patients, foreign residents in Korea, drug-resistant TB, retreatment patients, frequent hospital switching, multiple underlying diseases, and current smoking status. These research findings could inform the development of efficient management strategies and policies for improving the treatment success rate among patients wi…
Future changes in extreme heatwaves in terms of intensity and duration over the Cordex-East Asia Phase Two domain using multi-GCM and multi-RCM chains
An extreme heatwave, in terms of intensity and duration, is projected to occur at the end of the 21st century (2071–2100) over the whole of East Asia. The projection is calculated using daily maximum temperature data of 25 km horizontal resolution produced by 12 general circulation model-regional climate model chains participating in the CORDEX-East Asia Phase 2 project. An ‘extreme’ heatwave is defined as one in which the heatwave magnitude (HWM…
Summer extreme temperatures in South Korea and their intensification under 3 °C global warming
With the acceleration in global warming, extreme hot temperatures have emerged as one of the most prominent risks. In this study, we characterize the unprecedented extreme temperatures that occurred in Korea in summer 2018, and attempt to explain how this locally observed extreme event can be interpreted in the context of 2 °C and 3 °C global warming above the pre-industrial level. To better resolve geographically diverse climate features and enh…
