  • Cultivating Confidence: The Potential of Science Museum Visits in Boosting Science Self‐Efficacy and Expanding Perceptions of Science in Emerging Adult Learners

    Open Access•Hsin‐yi Chien, Joshua P Gutwill et al.•ARTICLE•Science Education•2025•References: 85

This study examines the impact of a single science museum visit on the science self‐efficacy (SSE) of emerging adult learners. Building upon previous research, which showed a significant short‐term impact of a museum visit on SSE, our study aims to replicate these findings and gain deeper insights into the underlying mechanisms contributing to increased SSE. In the present study, we implemented a randomized control trial design and hired a recrui…

  • Linguistic justice as a framework for designing, developing, and managing natural language processing tools

    Open Access•Jean Nee, Genevieve Macfarlane Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 19

As natural language processing tools powered by big data become increasingly ubiquitous, questions of how to design, develop, and manage these tools and their impacts on diverse populations are pressing. We propose utilizing the concept of linguistic justice-the realization of equitable access to social and political life regardless of language-to provide a framework for examining natural language processing tools that learn from and use human la…

  • Understanding the effects of language revitalization workshops using long-format speech environment recordings

    Open Access•Jean Nee•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2021

Long-format speech environment (LFSE) recordings are increasingly used to understand language acquisition among young children (Casillas & Cristia 2019). But in language revitalization, older children are sometimes the largest demographic acquiring a language. In Teotitlán del Valle, Mexico, older children have participated in Zapotec language revitalization workshops since 2017. To better understand how these children use language, and to probe …

  • Engaging with linguistic justice through objectives-based learning and independent research

Open Access•Jean Nee, Julia Nee et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2021

How can we foster the learner investment required for difficult, reflexive discussions about linguistic justice? We address this question through our efforts as instructors in a general education course on language in the US. To help students reflect on their own positionality within systems of oppression, we nurtured student-instructor relationships where students felt respected, valued, and capable of success using objectives-based assessment s…

  • The Ending of Menstruation: Perspectives and Experiences of Lesbian and Heterosexual Women

Abbey Hyde, Jean Nee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2011

This article aims to theorize how a sample of menopausal women, lesbian and heterosexual, construct the ending of their periods, and what the experience means for them. Findings indicate that for most of the lesbian participants (who were in a sizeable minority), emotions of loss at the ending of periods were simultaneously expressed alongside positive feelings, and they engaged in greater introspection around the issue than did heterosexual wome…

  • Women’s Accounts of Heterosexual Experiences in the Context of Menopause

Abbey Hyde, Jean Nee et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2011

A number of biomedical models of female sexuality have emerged during the past few decades, and these have been challenged by feminist theorists who have tended to focus on the influence of contextual issues that mediate women's sexual experiences. In this article, a qualitative analysis of accounts relating to heterosexual experiences obtained from 25 menopausal women in Ireland through in-depth interviews is presented and considered in light of…

  • Menopause Narratives: The Interplay of Women's Embodied Experiences With Biomedical Discourses

    Open Access•Abbey Hyde, Jean Nee et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 21

Conventional approaches to menopause tend to contrast the biomedical position on menopause with women's actual experiences of it. Rather than focusing primarily on the tensions between these perspectives (biomedical vs. lay), our emphasis here is on the impact of biomedicine in shaping participants' perceptions of their status as menopausal. Based on interview data gathered from 39 women in Ireland, we argue that the cultural authority of biomedi…
