  • How do common pool natural resources relate to rural income, poverty and inequality? A multi-country assessment

Open Access•Anamika Das, Subhash Lele et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2026

  • The enigmatic ‘Newall boulder’ excavated at Stonehenge in 1924: New data and correcting the record

    Open Access•R E Bevins, Nicholas J G Pearce et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025

  • The complexity of compliance—Diverse responses to octopus fishery closures in Zanzibar

Open Access•Elizabeth Drury O’neill, Tim Daw et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2024

Marine protected areas like periodic closures are increasingly used to improve both fisheries management and biodiversity conservation, and often secondarily, human well‐being. Yet rule breaking, whether formal regulations, or community‐agreed norms, continues to negate expected management and conservation outcomes, remaining a major challenge. Although compliance scholarship today is expanding beyond non‐economic explanations of (non)‐compliance…

  • What do you mean 'Climate Change'? An analysis of climate change framings in three climate assemblies

    Open Access•Corinna Zeitfogel, Tim Daw et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 8

How climate change is framed within CAs is critical for both the democratic legitimacy and transformative potential of CAs. Narrow technical frames can exclude valid perspectives and policy options and close down debate on broader systemic and potentially more transformative issues. Conversely, such ‘system-supporting’ framings may yield more specific and applicable policy recommendations, increasing the likelihood of implementation. In this stud…

  • Diverse fisher-trader relations shape responses of small-scale fisheries to global change

Open Access•Kirill Orach, Laura Elsler et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2024

Small-scale fisheries are likely to experience a higher frequency and magnitude of environmental and socioeconomic change because of increasing climate shocks and pressures that result from them, as well as because of the influence of global market dynamics. Fisheries’ responses to the impacts of global change are often influenced by relations between fishers and traders. Such relations constitute a link between markets, fishers, and the marine e…

  • Lithological description and provenancing of a collection of bluestones from excavations at Stonehenge by William Hawley in 1924 with implications for the human versus ice transport debate of the monu…

    Open Access•R E Bevins, Rob Ixer et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 11

A rhyolite boulder collected by R. S. Newall in 1924 from an excavation at Stonehenge has been pivotal to arguments concerning glacial versus human transport of the bluestones to Stonehenge. Initial studies suggested that the boulder came from north Wales, and hence was a probable glacial erratic. New petrographic and geochemical analyses however support it being from Craig Rhos‐y‐Felin in west Wales, the source of much debitage recovered from St…

  • Vulnerability Among Fishers in Southern Brazil and its Relation to Marine Protected Areas in a Scenario of Declining Fisheries

Open Access•Luiz Francisco Ditzel Faraco, José Milton Andriguetto-Filho et al.•ARTICLE•Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente•2016

  • An ecosystem approach to small-scale fisheries through participatory diagnosis in four tropical countries

  • Winners and Losers in Marine Conservation: Fishers' Displacement and Livelihood Benefits from Marine Reserves

    Joshua E Cinner, Tim Daw et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 2

Marine reserves can create both benefits and costs to fishers. This article explores the perceptions of fishers in Kenya and Seychelles about displacement, spillover, and overall impacts of local marine reserves on their livelihoods. We test whether these perceptions are different among fishers from different geographic and socioeconomic conditions. Sixty-six percent of fishers had been displaced from marine reserves or coastal development and 90…

  • Parchmarks at Stonehenge, July 2013

Open Access•Simon Banton, Mark Bowden et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Despite being one of the most intensively explored prehistoric monuments in western Europe, Stonehenge continues to hold surprises. The principal elements of the complex are well known: the outer bank and ditch, the sarsen circle capped by lintels, the smaller bluestone settings and the massive central trilithons. They represent the final phase of Stonehenge, the end product of a complicated sequence that is steadily being refined (most recently …

  • Applying the ecosystem services concept to poverty alleviation: The need to disaggregate human well-being

    Open Access•Tim Daw, Tim M Daw et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Conservation•2011

The concept of ecosystem services (ES), the benefits humans derive from ecosystems, is increasingly applied to environmental conservation, human well-being and poverty alleviation, and to inform the development of interventions. Payments for ecosystem services (PES) implicitly recognize the unequal distribution of the costs and benefits of maintaining ES, through monetary compensation from ‘winners’ to ‘losers’. Some research into PES has examine…

  • Responding to change: Using scenarios to understand how socioeconomic factors may influence amplifying or dampening exploitation feedbacks among Tanzanian fishers

    Open Access•Joshua E Cinner, Carl Folke et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2010•Cited by: 15•References: 8

  • Uses of Fishers' Knowledge in Fisheries Management

Open Access•Selina Stead, Tim Daw et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2006•Cited by: 1

This article reviews methods used in the increasing use of fishers' knowledge in contemporary fisheries management. During the last one hundred years, fisheries science has been used extensively to inform management decisions for the regulation of sea fisheries. However, the decline of many fish stocks has cast doubt on the sufficiency of fisheries science, and has led to demands from fishers that their own expertise—fishers' knowledge—should be …
