From Anthropologist to Adman Anthropology as Preparation for a Business Career
An anthropologist who became an adman and worked as a copywriter for a large Japanese agency describes what he learned by pursuing a non-academic career in advertising. He then applies what he learned to a comparative analysis of three approaches to promoting business anthropology in China: the Southern School's latest-thing, import-oriented approach, the Northern School's locally grounded domesticated approach, and the globalized, creative appro…

Japanese Consumer Behaviour
What role does consumption play in Japanese lives that are more than study, work and shopping? How have those lives changed since World War II as Japan has wrestled with the meaning of white-collar careers, women spreading their wings, changing family values, a shrinking birth rate, an aging population? This book explores Japan through the eyes of Japanese researchers and discovers patterns of change that are both uniquely Japanese and shared by …

Getting To Persuasion
The argument of this article is that persuasion is a topic largely neglected by anthropologists, who prefer to see human behavior as conforming to cultural rules or driven by social forces. Drawing on his experience in the advertising business in Japan, the author examines persuasion in light of cultural heuristics available to would-be persuaders striving to create different types of social relationships

Finding Meaning in the Muddle
A Japanese Advertising Agency
This is the only book of its kind - written by an anthropologist who spent twelve months doing fieldwork in a major Tokyo agency and who has spent the past 30 years studying and living in Japan. By examining the production of advertising, this book turns other semiotics, media and cultural studies theories on their heads. By analysing the social structure of a modern media organization from the inside, it makes anthropology relevant and intellect…
Finding Meaning in the Muddle
When a Japanese advertising agency develops campaigns for multinational clients, cultures clash. Conflict, confusion and misunderstanding complicate the already complex processes involved in the production of advertising. Can anthropological theory illuminate what is going on? The answer is "Yes." Concepts of field, habitus and social drama developed by Pierre Bourdieu and Victor Turner do shed light on this highly fraught cross-cultural encounte…

Negotiating With Demons
How should we read the language of magic? As speech acts with performative force? As dramatic metaphor with special, emotional powers? As poetic form whose syntatic restrictions embody a special authority? Or, better still, as all three? This article examines the language employed in a Taoist exorcism performed in Taiwan and illustrates the need to attend to the multiple uses of language in magical and other performances.[magic, metaphor, perform…

The Female Lingam
The main purpose of the paper is to refute the rigid psychoanalytic determinism which holds that we cannot help attributing an exclusively male or female meaning to certain sexual symbols. Simultaneously it attempts to show that symbols are not as context-bound as structuralists are inclined to think, since the reversals of meanings discussed mostly refer to the individual symbol without affecting the context. A series of iconographic symbols and…
