QuakeBox Similes
We analyze the use of similes in the QuakeBox corpus, a unique longitudinal corpus of retold earthquake stories recorded seven years apart following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake to investigate how the narration of extreme experiences changes over time. We distinguish between “distanced” similes that evoke a mediated or emotional experience and “direct” similes that describe a concrete or embodied experience. Linking these simile type…
Shifting discourses of togetherness and heroism in retold earthquake stories
This paper examines how disaster-related discourses are produced in storytelling, and whether and in what way these discourses may change in the second telling. We examine two sets of retold stories taken from a corpus of 123 retold stories about the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes in New Zealand. Findings indicate that these storytellers tell structurally similar stories, yet implement subtle linguistic changes which produce different positioni…
Culture, the missing link in value creation and governance in knowledge‐intensive institutions
This Special Issue focuses on the key characteristics, values, and processes of knowledge intensive organisations (KIOs) and how culturesensitive governance is needed to support creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation. In this special issue, we emphasise leadership and culture as key factors in KIO success
Maternal Attachment, Paternal Overnight Contact, and Very Young Children's Adjustment
We are compelled to respond to Tornello et al. (2013) because of concerns about measures and theory and because some findings of their study were misleadingly presented. Their results, as described in the abstract and DISCUSSION section, were reported in news media aimed at the general public in the United States (Divorce Study, 2013; Hallas, 2013; HealthDay News, 2013b) and overseas (Asian News International, 2013; Furness, 2013), physicians (He…
Neighbourhood Accessibility and Active Travel
Neighbourhoods are advocated in UK planning policy in order to foster social capital, combat obesity and reduce transport greenhouse emissions. The new agenda of localism reinforces this move. Yet travel behaviour trends, and the continuing decline of local facilities, are working in the opposite direction. A review of earlier research points to gaps in our empirical knowledge and uncertainties about the degree to which spatial policy can influen…
Whitewashing Criminal Justice in Canada
Race and racism have long played an important role in Canadian law and continue to do so. However, conducting research on race and criminal justice in Canada is difficult given the lack of readily available data that include information about race. We show that data on the race of victims and accused persons are being suppressed by police organizations in Canada and argue that suppression of race prevents quantitative anti-racism research while n…
Research Note
The debate over the collection of justice statistics by race continues to hinge on the same key issues that were central to the debate when it arose in the early 1990s. There has been one major change, however: whereas racial minority groups were once vehemently opposed to the collection of justice statistics by race, for fear that such statistics would be used to justify discriminatory policies, many minority groups are now advocating for the co…
Punishing Our Way Out of Poverty
This article describes the emergence of imprisonment as part of the collection of child-support debt in Alberta, Canada. This approach to child poverty arose in the context of political conservatism, a shift in the feminist movement, and changes in the legal environment. Findings indicate that incarceration for support debt is increasing and that Blacks, Aboriginals, the unemployed, and those without post-secondary education are over-represented …

What Were They Thinking? The Development of Child Support Guidelines in Canada
Explaining Child Custody Determinations in Canada
Many earlier studies of Canadian child custody determinations have been written from ideological and feminist viewpoints. This study attempts to look at this subject from an empirical and sociological stance, within its historical context. Several related issues are considered, including the central issue of sexism, and the effects of legislation and case law on these determinations. Models of how custody cases settled by trial affect those negot…
