  • Echocardiographic Screening for Rheumatic Heart Disease in a Ugandan Orphanage

Open Access•Massimo Mapelli, Paola Zagni et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

We demonstrated the feasibility of an echocardiographic screening for RHD in an orphanage in Uganda. A few factors, such as good clinical and hygienic care, the availability of antibiotics and closeness to a big hospital, may account for the low prevalence of the disease in our population

  • Unexpected Huge Prevalence of Intracardiac Extension of Wilms Tumor—A Single Center Experience from a Ugandan Hospital

Open Access•Massimo Mapelli, Paola Zagni et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Wilms tumor (WT) is the most common primary renal malignancy in young children. WT vascular extension to the inferior vena cava (IVC) occurs in 4-10% of cases and can reach the right atrium (RA) in 1%. Data on WT clinical presentation and outcome in developing countries are limited. The aim of the present study is to describe the prevalence of intracardiac extension in a consecutive population of WT patients observed in a large non-profit Ugandan…

  • Case Report

    Open Access•Inês Falcão‐Pires, Massimo Mapelli et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

We present the first case of acute HF showing coexistence of TA, TTS and coronary vasospasm. TA is a rare inflammatory disease that can be associated with TTS and coronary vasospasm. Besides that, coronary vasospasm may also be involved in TTS pathophysiology, suggesting a complex interplay between these diseases. Mood disorders and anxiety influence the response to stress, through a gain of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and an increase…

  • A Case of William’s Syndrome in a Ugandan Child

Open Access•Massimo Mapelli, Paola Zagni et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

We present the first reported case of WS in Uganda. Cardiac echo and a characteristic clinical picture could be enough to exclude more common causes of heart failure (i.e., rheumatic heart disease) and to make the diagnosis even when specific genetic tests are not available
