  • Trait and state-related characteristics of thalamo-cortical circuit disruption in bipolar disorder

Open Access•Can Zeng, Suqun Liao et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

This study discovered that both bipolar depression and remission had abnormal sensorimotor-thalamic functional connectivity, implying that it is a trait-related characteristic of bipolar disorder; however, the decline in prefrontal-thalamic connectivity exists specifically in bipolar depression, implying that it is a state-related characteristic of bipolar disorder

  • Abnormal Large-Scale Network Activation Present in Bipolar Mania and Bipolar Depression Under Resting State

Open Access•Can Zeng, Brendan Ross et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Introduction: Previous studies have primarily focused on the neuropathological mechanisms of the emotional circuit present in bipolar mania and bipolar depression. Recent studies applying resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have raise the possibility of examining brain-wide networks abnormality between the two oppositional emotion states, thus this study aimed to characterize the different functional architecture represente…

  • Acute and Chronic Effects of Betel Quid Chewing on Brain Functional Connectivity

Open Access•Adellah Sariah, Shuixia Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

These findings show that individuals who chronically use betel quid have higher functional connectivity than controls of the orbitofrontal cortex, and inferior temporal and angular gyri. Acute effects of betel quid are to increase the functional connectivity of some visual cortical areas (which may relate to the acute symptoms) and the basal ganglia and thalamus

  • Altered Temporal Variability of Local and Large-Scale Resting-State Brain Functional Connectivity Patterns in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Open Access•Yicheng Long, Zhening Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder share some common clinical features and are both characterized by aberrant resting-state functional connectivity (FC). However, little is known about the common and specific aberrant features of the dynamic FC patterns in these two disorders. In this study, we explored the differences in dynamic FC among schizophrenia patients ( n = 66), type I bipolar disorder patients ( n = 53), and healthy controls ( n = 66),…

  • Reduced Cortical Thickness in the Right Caudal Middle Frontal Is Associated With Symptom Severity in Betel Quid-Dependent Chewers

Open Access•Adellah Sariah, Weidan Pu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

The findings provide evidence for cortical thickness abnormality in betel dependent chewers and further propose that the severity of betel quid symptoms may be a critical aspect associated with the cortical alterations. The observed alterations may serve as potential mechanisms to explain why BQ chewing behavior is persistent among individuals with betel quid dependence

  • Comparison of Psychological Stress Levels and Associated Factors Among Healthcare Workers, Frontline Workers, and the General Public During the Novel Coronavirus Pandemic

Open Access•Rongrong Luan, Weidan Pu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Objective: We aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of the psychological stress experienced by healthcare workers, frontline workers, and the general public and to assess the factors associated with psychological stress in each of these groups. Methods: We conducted an online survey targeting healthcare workers, frontline workers, and the general public. Psychological stress was assessed with the revised impact of event scale (IES-R). Univariab…

  • Abnormal Connectivity Within Anterior Cortical Midline Structures in Bipolar Disorder

Open Access•Jie Yang, Weidan Pu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

Background: Aberrant functional and structural connectivity across multiple brain networks have been reported in bipolar disorder (BD). However, most previous studies consider the functional and structural alterations in isolation regardless of their possible integrative relationship. The present study aimed to identify the brain connectivity alterations in BD by capturing the latent nexus in multimodal neuroimaging data. Methods: Structural and …

  • Resilience and Cognitive Function in Patients With Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder, and Healthy Controls

Open Access•Mengjie Deng, Yunzhi Pan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Background: This study compared adaptive resilience among patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and healthy controls, and examined the relationship of resilience to cognitive function. Methods: A sample of 81 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, 34 with bipolar disorder, and 52 healthy controls completed the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and cognitive tests of verbal comprehension, executive functioning, and working memory…

  • Associations Among Suicidal Ideation, White Matter Integrity and Cognitive Deficit in First-Episode Schizophrenia

Open Access•Yicheng Long, Xuan Ouyang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Objective: The study was aimed to investigate the possible associations among suicidal ideation, brain white matter (WM) integrity and cognitive deficit in first-episode schizophrenia (FES) using diffusion tensor imaging. Methods: The sample contained 18 FES patients with suicidal ideation (SI+), 45 FES patients without suicidal ideation (SI-) and 44 healthy controls. The Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia was used to measure the suicidal…

  • Altered Brain Functional Connectivity in Betel Quid-Dependent Chewers

Open Access•Xiaojun Huang, Weidan Pu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2017

Our findings provide further evidence that BQ chewing may lead to brain functional connectivity changes, which may play a key role in the psychological and physiological effects of BQ

  • Decreased Left Putamen and Thalamus Volume Correlates with Delusions in First-Episode Schizophrenia Patients

Open Access•Xiaojun Huang, Weidan Pu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2017

Left putamen and thalamus volume loss may be biological correlates of delusions in schizophrenia
