Alcohol Control Laws and the Consumption of Distilled Spirits and Beer
This article tests the social marketing effectiveness of alcohol control laws designed to reduce the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The study uses state-level historical data to estimate the demand for distilled spirits and beer using economic, sociodemographic, and control-law explanatory variables. Spirits and beer consumption are found to react differently to changes in economic, sociodemographic, and regulatory variables. These differenc…
Lag Specification in Rational Distributed Lag Structural Models
This article presents methods for the preliminary specification of distributed lags in structural models in the absence of sufficient a priori information. It is argued that an instrumental-variables procedure produces good results as long as the goodness of fit in the instrument equations is satisfactory. When this is not the case, simple OLS specification is preferable to more complex instrumental-variables methods, even though it may produce s…
Willingness to Supply Human Body Parts: Some Empirical Results
Despite the serious shortage of human body parts for transplantation purposes, little research has been done to provide guidance for action. Based on sample data, this pilot study examines the demographic and attitudinal characteristics of potential donors. The results have direct relevance for programs to increase the supply of body parts
