Mitochondrial DNA diversity in northeast Iberians during the Iron Age
Molecular polymorphism of the ABO blood group
Mitochondrial DNA and Y‐chromosome structure at the mediterranean and atlantic façades of the iberian peninsula
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to analyze mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome lineages in a range of Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of the Iberian Peninsula in search of genetic differences between both façades and to uncover the most probable geographic origin and coalescence ages of lineages. METHODS: The control region of mitochondrial DNA and haplogroup diagnostic positions were analyzed in 575 subjects and Y-chromosome markers w…
Y‐chromosome analysis in a Northwest Iberian population
OBJECTIVES: To provide new clues about the genetic origin, composition and structure of the population of the Spanish province of Zamora, with an emphasis on the genetic impact of the period of Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula. METHODS: Polymorphisms in the paternally inherited Y-chromosome, Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Short Tandem Repeats, were analyzed in 235 unrelated males born in six different regions in the Zamora province. RES…
Mitochondrial DNA patterns in the Iberian Northern plateau
Several studies have shown the importance of recent events in the configuration of the genetic landscape of a specific territory. In this context, due to the phenomena of repopulation and demographic fluctuations that took place in recent centuries, the Iberian Northern plateau is a very interesting case study. The main aim of this work is to check if recent population movements together with existing boundaries (geographical and administrative) …
Biodemographic and Genetic Structure of Zamora Province (Spain)
Y‐chromosome variation in South Iberia
Population of Pedroches Valley, a hypothetical Berber settlement, located in the northwest portion of Córdoba province (Andalusia, Spain), had been analyzed for its Y-chromosome diversity. Moreover, to contextualize this population, 127 Y-chromosomes from a general Andalusia sample and a North African Berber community (Marrakech, Morocco) were also typed. For all samples, 24 single nucleotide polymorphisms of the non-recombining portion of the Y-…
Genetic Structure of Flores Island (Azores, Portugal) in the 19th Century and in the Present Day
The island of Flores is the most westerly of the Azores archipelago (Portugal). Despite its marked geographic isolation and reduced population size, biodemographic and genetic studies conducted so far do not support the idea that its population constitutes a genetic isolate. In this study we conducted a surname analysis of the Flores population for two time periods: the second half of the 19th century and the present day. Our main purposes were (…
Determination of Human European Mitochondrial DNA Haplogroups by Means of a Hierarchical Approach
In this paper we propose a hierarchical approach that allows the screening of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups in populations that have essentially West Eurasian mtDNA backgrounds but that could have some non-West Eurasian contributions. To develop and validate this scheme, we used data on 18 coding region polymorphisms (17 analyzed by RFLP analysis and 1 by sequencing) and sequences of hypervariable segment I (HVSI) of the mtDNA control reg…
GM and KM immunoglobulin allotypes in a Spanish Pyrenean population
Four hundred and thirteen unrelated individuals (202 autochthonous and 211 non-autochthonous) of Val d'Aran (Catalan Pyrenees) have been analysed for the GM and KM immunoglobulin genetic system using the inhibition haemagglutination method. This population was defined by eight GM haplotypes (GM*3 23 5*, GM*3 5*, GM*1,17 21,28, GM*1,2,17 21,28, GM*1,17 5*, GM*1,17 5,6,11,24, GM*1,17 10,11,13,15 and GM*1,17 10,11,13,15,16) inferred from the 17 obse…
Pathological Evidence in Newborn Children from the Sixteenth Century in Huelva (Spain)
Archaeological infant remains rarely appear in the palaeopathological literature; above all there are few references to neonatal individuals. This work presents four infant pathological specimens from the crypt of the Ermita de la Soledad (sixteenth to nineteenth century, Huelva, Spain). The bones analysed—one right hemifrontal, two humeri and a femur—belong to at least two individuals of between 0 and 6 months of age. The differential diagnosis …
Marital mobility in populations of the High Aran Valley
The analysis of 2.623 marriage certificates in the towns in the High Aran Valley shows marriage mobility between the years 1650 and 1990 and indicates the level of population's endogamy. The results from the data collected in the town of Arties are presented as an example. The distribution of the places of origin of spouses and a factor analysis show a remarkable geographical endogamy until 1940. The results from marriage mobility are confirmed b…
Changes in marriage seasonality among some european rural populations
The preservation or the change of the population structure is often strictly related to the acquisition or loss of behavioural models: the choice of the wedding period is among them. Analysing the period in which people marry, it is possible to point out modifications in the economy, in the work calendar and it also can be helpful to determine the importance of religious traditions. In this work, the authors study the marriage seasonality of nine…
