Interaction between duration, context, and speaking style in English stressed vowels
Acoustic observations are reported for English front vowels embedded in a /w—l/ frame and carrying constant main stress. The vowels were produced by five speakers in clear and citation-form styles at varying durations but at a constant speaking rate. The acoustic analyses revealed (i) that formant patterns were systematically displaced in the direction of the frequencies of the consonants of the adjacent pseudosymmetrical context; (ii) that those…
Variability in jaw height for segments in English and Swedish VCVs
Linguistic Experience Alters Phonetic Perception in Infants by 6 Months of Age
Linguistic experience affects phonetic perception. However, the critical period during which experience affects perception and the mechanism responsible for these effects are unknown. This study of 6-month-old infants from two countries, the United States and Sweden, shows that exposure to a specific language in the first half year of life alters infants' phonetic perception.
On the Role of Perception in Shaping Phonological Assimilation Rules
Assimilation of nasals to the place of articulation of following consonants is a common and natural process among the world's languages. An articulatory model is presented. It defines a procedure for deriving a set of formant frequencies from information on the state of the lip muscles, the position of the jaw, the shape and position of the tongue body, and larynx height.
