The language that unites and the language that divides us: Why was Arabic kept and Serbo-Croatian abolished
This article explores why the Arabs chose to keep a common language, while the Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks and Montenegrins chose not to. The study argues that the main reason for this can be found in the ideological constrains resulting out of the salience and interaction between different religious and ethnic group building projects in former Yugoslavia and the Arab states. Opportunity structures and group building processes: An institutional analysis of the secession processes in Pridnestrovie and Gagauzia between 1989 and 1991
The existence and the effective utilization of opportunity structures by the Gagauz and Pridnestrovian elites between 1989 and 1991 enabled them to successfully mobilize wide parts of the population, take control of the administration and build parallel state structures out of the control of both Chişinău and Moscow. The Role of the Orthodox Churches in Defining the Nation in Post-Soviet Moldova
This study looks into current nation-building processes in Moldova on both sides of the Dniester and the role of Orthodoxy in enforcing them. It demonstrates how the clerical and political hierarchy of Moldova utilized the category of Orthodoxy in order to construct and implement their respective ideas on nation-and statehood.
