  • Family Dynamics and Mental Health in Schizophrenia: Investigating the Impact of Cohesion and Adaptability

Open Access•Seunghyong Ryu, Anna Jo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2026

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine how family cohesion and adaptability are associated with mental health outcomes, including functionality, mood, stress, and well-being, in individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: A total of 225 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders were included in the analysis. Participants were assessed using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES-III), Positiv…

  • Employment-dependent associations of serum biomarkers with short- and long-term antidepressant treatment outcomes

    Open Access•Jae-Min Kim, Hee-Ju Kang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

Baseline serum biomarkers showed employment-dependent associations with antidepressant remission outcomes, highlighting serotonin's short-term relevance and leptin, TNF-α, and BDNF as longer-term indicators. Although exploratory, these findings suggest that integrating employment status with biomarker profiles may enhance clinical decision-making by identifying patients who are more or less likely to benefit from treatment across different phases…

  • Impacts of heart rate variability on post-traumatic stress disorder risks after physical injuries: Amplification with childhood abuse histories

Open Access•Jimin Jeon, Ji Hyeon Jeon et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Childhood abuse history significantly moderates the relationship between LF-HF HRV components and PTSD development, suggesting that childhood adversities amplify the risk. These findings support the importance of screening for childhood abuse histories and monitoring HRV in physically injured patients as part of the assessment process

  • Association between suicidal ideation and cognitive function in young patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder

    Open Access•Jisu Kim, Ji-Su Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Our results suggest that along with traditional risk factors, better cognitive function may also be a major risk factor for suicidality in patients with schizophrenia. Providing psychological support and cognitive interventions is essential for young patients with recent-onset schizophrenia spectrum disorders, particularly those with high levels of depression, hopelessness, perceived stress, low resilience, and good cognitive function

  • Covid-19 vaccine acceptance and related behavioral and psychological characteristics in individuals with mental disorders in Korea

Open Access•Seunghyong Ryu, Hangoeunbi Kang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

The present study demonstrated that individuals with mental disorders were generally willing to receive COVID-19 vaccination. However, they weighed its need and effectiveness against potential side effects before coming to a decision. It is important to understand the behavioral and psychological characteristics associated with vaccine acceptance, to effectively communicate its importance to individuals with mental disorders

  • Age-specific associations between serum cholesterol levels and suicidal behaviors in patients with depressive disorders: A naturalistic prospective observational cohort study

    Open Access•Wonsuk Choi, Hee‐Ju Kang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

These findings suggest that differential consideration of serum total cholesterol levels according to age group may have clinical utility for predicting suicidality in patients with depressive disorders. However, because our research participants came from a single-hospital, the generalizability of our findings may be limited

  • Childhood Abuse, Social Support, and Long-Term Pharmacological Treatment Outcomes in Patients With Depressive Disorders

    Open Access•Ju-Yeon Lee, Ju‐Yeon Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Synergistic interactive effects of child abuse and social support levels on treatment outcomes in depressive patients were found during long-term pharmacotherapy. Thus, depressed patients with a history of childhood abuse may require specialized clinical approaches, including social support, to enhance the long-term treatment outcomes

  • Case report: Recovery of hallucinations and cognitive impairment after administration of donepezil in a patient with schizophrenia and carbon monoxide poisoning

    Open Access•Seon-Hwa Baek, Ju‐Wan Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

This case showed a good response of donepezil for a patient with schizophrenia and CO-induced DNS after ineffective HBOT. Although the mechanism of the phenomenon is unclear, it can be possible reasons that the neuroprotective effect of donepezil and white matter insult by CO poisoning

  • Serotonin modifies the impact of sleep disturbance on suicidality in patients with acute coronary syndrome

    Open Access•Jae‐Min Kim, Jae-Min Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Evaluating sleep disturbance and serum serotonin levels could improve the accuracy of clinical predictions of suicidal ideation in the acute and chronic phases of ACS

  • Prediction of Suicidality According to Serum Folate Levels in Depressive Patients Receiving Stepwise Pharmacotherapy

    Open Access•Jae‐Min Kim, Jae-Min Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: The effects of serum folate levels on suicidal behavior, strongly associated with depression, have not been investigated. Therefore, this study investigated the associations between serum folate levels and suicidal behavior in patients with depressive disorders. Methods: Serum folate levels were measured at baseline in 1,094 patients with depressive disorder, 884 of whom were followed during a 12-month period of stepwise pharmacothera…

  • Associations Between Covid-19 Symptoms and Psychological Distress

    Open Access•Ju‐Wan Kim, Ju-Wan Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: Hospital isolation for COVID-19 may cause significant psychological stress. The association between COVID-19 symptoms and psychological symptoms has not been systematically studied. We investigated the effects of telephonic intervention on the relationship between psychological symptoms and COVID-19 symptoms at the time of hospitalization and 1 week later. Method: We screened 461 patients with COVID-19 for psychiatric symptoms from Fe…

  • Comparison of Psychosocial Distress in Areas With Different Covid-19 Prevalence in Korea

    Open Access•Mina Kim, In-Hoo Park et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Objectives: This study aimed to compare psychosocial distress in areas in Korea with different prevalence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) after validating a questionnaire on psychological experiences and stress associated with the disease outbreak. Methods: Using an online-based survey, psychosocial distress associated with COVID-19 was investigated in three regions, which were selected according to their prevalence of COVID-19. A total of…

  • Longitudinal Associations Between Serum Cytokine Levels and Dementia

    Open Access•Ju‐Wan Kim, Ju-Wan Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether long-term inflammation is related to the incidence of dementia in a prospective observational study. Methods: In total, 732 Korean community-dwelling elderly people >65 years were evaluated at baseline. Of the 625 without dementia, 518 (83%) were followed over a 2.4-years period, and the incidence of dementia was determined. Cytokine [interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and tumo…
