One response to scarcity is to invest more effort in subsistence activities. It is also possible to respond by adjusting the level of effort in nonwork, or leisure, activities. Factionalism and Local Level Politics in Rural Brazil
Local factional strife has been interpreted as emanating from the strains of modernization as the "new society" struggles to throw off the bonds of the old. My findings show, on the contrary, that factionalism does not promote change but helps preserve the status quo. This study of the consequences of the introduction of sisal agriculture to Northeastern Brazil exemplifies a fruitful area of collaboration between nutritionists and anthropologists. The process by which sisal leaves are transformed into exportable fiber is analysed with emphasis on the human energy expenditure required.
