  • Enhancing diagnostic logic in high-acuity care: Evidence from an online flipped classroom intervention in emergency medicine

Open Access•Ali Delirrooyfard, Mehdi Sayyah et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Medical Education•2026

  • Medical education and the 12-day Iran war: Emphasizing the impact of resilience and medical training

    Mehdi Sayyah•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2026

Dear EditorThe 12-day Iran war, an immoral and devastating conflict, disrupted healthcare systems and medical education in the region. War is inherently wrong, causing suffering that challenges the

  • Sleeping through the ceasefire: Internet blackout, fragile truce anxiety, and war-related insomnia in the 2026 Iran conflict

    Open Access•Mehdi Sayyah•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2026

Following the April 2026 ceasefire in the Iran conflict, this commentary examines the unique interplay between wartime internet blackouts and insomnia pathogenesis. We introduce the concept of ‘fragile truce anxiety’ to describe a state where reduced objective threat coexists with persistent subjective uncertainty, posing specific risks for insomnia chronification. Unlike previous escalations, Iran’s near-total internet shutdown limited civilian …

  • Global burden and strength of evidence for 88 risk factors in 204 countries and 811 subnational locations, 1990–2021: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

    Open Access•Michael Brauer, Gregory A Roth et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Understanding the health consequences associated with exposure to risk factors is necessary to inform public health policy and practice. To systematically quantify the contributions of risk factor exposures to specific health outcomes, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 aims to provide comprehensive estimates of exposure levels, relative health risks, and attributable burden of disease for 88 ri…

  • Global burden of 288 causes of death and life expectancy decomposition in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1990–2021: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease…

Open Access•Mohsen Naghavi, Kanyin Liane Ong et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Regular, detailed reporting on population health by underlying cause of death is fundamental for public health decision making. Cause-specific estimates of mortality and the subsequent effects on life expectancy worldwide are valuable metrics to gauge progress in reducing mortality rates. These estimates are particularly important following large-scale mortality spikes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. When systematically analysed, mort…

  • Global, regional, and national burden of disorders affecting the nervous system, 1990–2021: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

Open Access•Jaimie D Steinmetz, Katrin Seeher et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Neurology•2024

BACKGROUND: Disorders affecting the nervous system are diverse and include neurodevelopmental disorders, late-life neurodegeneration, and newly emergent conditions, such as cognitive impairment following COVID-19. Previous publications from the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor Study estimated the burden of 15 neurological conditions in 2015 and 2016, but these analyses did not include neurodevelopmental disorders, as defined by…

  • Population-level risks of alcohol consumption by amount, geography, age, sex, and year: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2020

    Open Access•Dana Bryazka, Marissa B Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2022

BACKGROUND: The health risks associated with moderate alcohol consumption continue to be debated. Small amounts of alcohol might lower the risk of some health outcomes but increase the risk of others, suggesting that the overall risk depends, in part, on background disease rates, which vary by region, age, sex, and year. METHODS: For this analysis, we constructed burden-weighted dose-response relative risk curves across 22 health outcomes to esti…

  • Relationship Between Mental Health and Death Anxiety During Covid-19 Pandemic in Dental Staff and Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Open Access•Mahta Jazaiery, Kosar Rezaeifar et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

The overall findings represent a significant but contradictory relationship between mental health status and death anxiety among dental staff and students during the prevalence of COVID-19 pandemic. This suggests the impact of confounding factors in this area, which can be studied by future researchers and policy makers to design health promotion interventions

  • Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2017: A Systematic Analysi…

Open Access•Christina Fitzmaurice, Global Burden of Disease Cancer Collaboration et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Oncology•2019

Importance Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting hav…

  • Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and mortality of HIV, 1980–2017, and forecasts to 2030, for 195 countries and territories: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Diseases…

Open Access•Tahvi D Frank, Tahvi Frank et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet HIV•2019

BACKGROUND: Understanding the patterns of HIV/AIDS epidemics is crucial to tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts in countries. We provide a comprehensive assessment of the levels and trends of HIV/AIDS incidence, prevalence, mortality, and coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for 1980-2017 and forecast these estimates to 2030 for 195 countries and territories. METHODS: We determined a modelling strategy for ea…

  • Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality and life expectancy, 1950–2017: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Open Access•Daniel Dicker, Grant Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Assessments of age-specific mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent wit…

  • Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality for 282 causes of death in 195 countries and territories, 1980–2017: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

    Open Access•Gregory A Roth, D Abate et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Global development goals increasingly rely on country-specific estimates for benchmarking a nation's progress. To meet this need, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 estimated global, regional, national, and, for selected locations, subnational cause-specific mortality beginning in the year 1980. Here we report an update to that study, making use of newly available data and improved methods. GBD …

    Open Access•Jeffrey D Stanaway, Ashkan Afshin et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BackgroundThe Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk–outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk–outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk–outcome associatio…

Open Access•R Lozano, Nancy Fullman et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2…
