  • Cultural Identity and Indigenous Water Rights in the Andean Highlands

    Paul H Gelles•CHAPTER•Out of the Mainstream•2010

In the Andes, irrigation water is an important component of production, a source of both conflict and cooperation, and a key element of cultural identity. These different dimensions of water must be viewed together. This chapter argues that indigenous Andean culture and cultural identity continue to be key elements of local social relationships in rural peasant communities, and that these cultural orientations and ethnic identities are intimately…

  • Cultural Politics, Communal Resistance and Identity in Andean Irrigation Development

    Open Access•R Boelens, Paul H Gelles•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2005•Cited by: 25•References: 22

This article uses two case studies to illustrate how Andean irrigation development and management emerges from a hybrid mix of local community rules and the changing political forms and ideological forces of hegemonic states. Some indigenous water-control institutions are with us today because they were consonant with the extractive purposes of local elites and Inca, Spanish and post-independence Republican states. These states often appropriated…

  • Water and Power in Highland Peru: The Cultural Politics of Irrigation and Development

Paul H Gelles•BOOK•Water and Power in Highland Peru•2000•Cited by: 47

In Andean society, as in many other areas of the world, irrigation water carries broad cultural significance and has long been a source of conflict. Nowhere is the struggle over irrigation and over the cultural meanings of water more apparent than in Cabanaconde, a large peasant community located in the arid highlands of southern Peru. Using historical materials and richly detailed ethnographic reporting, Paul H. Gelles shows that water, ethnicit…

  • Andean Lives: Gregorio Condori Mamani and Asunta Quispe Huamán

Gabriela Martinez Escobar, Paul H Gelles et al.•BOOK•Andean Lives•1996

Gregorio Condori Mamani and Asunta Quispe Huamán were runakuna, a Quechua word that means "people" and refers to the millions of indigenous inhabitants neglected, reviled, and silenced by the dominant society in Peru and other Andean countries. For Gregorio and Asunta, however, that silence was broken when Peruvian anthropologists Ricardo Valderrama Fernández and Carmen Escalante Gutiérrez recorded their life stories. The resulting Spanish-Quechu…

The division of society and space into halves or "moieties" has been an important feature of Andean culture for centuries. Contemporary moieties are often regarded as the result of either an impervious pre-Columbian conceptual model that has resisted Spanish influence or of marriage preferences. In this article I challenge these views, arguing that the ubiquity of moiety organization today can best be understood as the result of an indigenous imp…
