  • Food and Labour under Imperial Rule: Unravelling the Food Landscape of Transplanted Workers (mitmaqkuna) in the Inka Empire

Open Access•Di Hu, Víctor Félix Vásquez Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 40

The Inka empire's expansion incorporated diverse cultural and ecological elements in microcosmic representations of their empire. This degree of imperial control might suggest a limitation on Inka subjects’ freedom to integrate non-local food resources into their diets. Employing starch grai…

  • Comment on “Shark fisheries during the second millennium BC in Gramalote, north coast of Peru”

Víctor Félix Vásquez Sánchez, Teresa Esperanza Rosales Tham et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2022

In reporting on prehistoric specialized shark fisheries at the Initial Period site of \nGramalote (~1500–1200 cal BCE) on the north coast of Peru, Prieto suggests that \nsubstantial quantities of sharks were captured by using shell rattles to attract and \nfiber nooses to capture them from small reed boats.

  • Carbon and Nitrogen Isotopic Survey of Northern Peruvian Plants: Baselines for Paleodietary and Paleoecological Studies

    Open Access•P Szpak, Christine D White et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2013

The development of isotopic baselines for comparison with paleodietary data is crucial, but often overlooked. We review the factors affecting the carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen (δ(15)N) isotopic compositions of plants, with a special focus on the carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of twelve different species of cultivated plants (n = 91) and 139 wild plant species collected in northern Peru. The cultivated plants were collected from nineteen…

  • Mortuary Practices and Human Sacrifice in the Middle Chao Valley of Peru: Their Interpretation in the Context of Andean Mortuary Patterning

    Open Access•Catherine Gaither, Jonathan Kent et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2008•Cited by: 8•References: 15

Investigations at several northern Peruvian coastal archaeological sites by archaeologists and physical anthropologists are beginning to provide details on long-term patterning of mortuary behavior. Some of these patterns include retainer sacrifice, child sacrifice, and the metaphorical principle we refer to as "like with like." In this paper, we discuss the data relating to these mortuary patterns discovered at the site of Santa Rita B in the mi…
