Evaluating the Effectiveness of an Extracurricular Teacher Education Training Program for DigCompEdu Competences
In the ongoing era of digital transformation, it is imperative for teachers to equip learners with essential digital competences to navigate the intricacies of the digital landscape successfully. As future in-service teachers function as role models and educators for the proper use of digital technology, pre-service teachers must develop adequate digital proficiency. This holds particularly true in Germany, where the prevailing competence levels …
Facilitating Equitable Distribution of Justice40 Initiative Funding for Lead in Drinking Water
Disadvantaged communities often find difficulty in meeting the eligibility criteria for federal funding opportunities. The Justice40 Initiative is the Biden administration's commitment to directing 40% of benefits from all Federal investments in clean energy and climate to disadvantaged communities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has designated $20 million available for the Reducing Lead in Drinking Water Program (RLDWP). Here, our coho…
Reminiscences of Lafcadio Hearn
Setsuko Koizumi (1868–1932) was the daughter of a Japanese samurai family in Matsué. In 1891 she married a foreigner — Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904) — and their union lasted 13 years and produced three children. Hearn adopted her family name, becoming Koizumi Yakumo 小泉八雲,and spent those years in Japan writing, teaching, and achieving international recognition. Setsuko’s Reminiscences tells something of the couple’s moves and travels, but focuses mos…
William Campbell Root, 1904-1969
Archaeologists will remember William C. Root for his extensive work on pre-Columbian metallurgy in the New World. What many do not know is that he also had a distinguished 37-year teaching career at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. In 1969, The American Chemical Society presented him with the James Norris Flack award for the teaching of chemistry. Root's death on June 13,1969, in the midst of ceremonies in honor of his retirement, terminated …

A Quarter Century of Growth in American Archaeology
To introduce papers presented at a celebration of the 25th annual meeting of The Society for American Archaeology the development of New World archaeology is very broadly and briefly summarized. Expanding knowledge of culture areas and taxonomic systems is traced. The development of salvage archaeology in reservoir areas, along roads and oil pipelines is mentioned. There is an account of the development of various types of relative chronologies i…
Some Ancient Sites in Greensberg and Ottawa Townships, Putnam County, Ohio
A collection of artifacts found in the lip of a terrace of the Blanchard River in northwestern Ohio comes from 17 presumably ancient sites which had not been used by peoples of Archaic and later stages of culture development. The artifacts are made of fine-grained cherty rock which is not known to occur in the region. The tools consist of fluted and other kinds of points, a wide variety of scrapers, 'utilized flakes' with sheared edges or edges m…
A Bibliography of Radiocarbon Dating
The scope of the problems which are involved in the determination of radiocarbon dates renders complete, or detailed, classification of the published results of the research most complicated. In assembling this bibliography several such classifications were discarded before the present simplified one emerged. It was found, for example, that in a detailed classification of subject titles a large number of papers would have to be listed under sever…

Radiocarbon Dating Lists and Their Use
The Denbigh Flint Complex is Not Yet Dated,” (American Antiquity, Vol. 20, No. 4, pp. 375-6) by J. L. Giddings raises a number of general questions concerning the collection of samples and the listings and use of radiocarbon dates which are not confined to the Denbigh material. Giddings says he is a “little worried about our use of ‘lists’ of radiocarbon dates in view of the recent treatment of some dates from Cape Denbigh.” The publication of li…

Radiocarbon Dating: A Summary
The Preceding discussions have considered the radiocarbon dates in relation to a number of archaeological, geological, and palynological problems. It remains to consider the endeavor as a whole, and to reach some conclusions concerning its present and future value and usefulness. Of primary importance is a consideration of what the dates mean. Basic to this is an understanding of the statistics involved. At the request of the Committee, Arnold, w…

The Rogers' Collection From Lakes Mistassini and Albanel, Province of Quebec
Edward and Murray Rogers have generously presented to the Peabody Foundation, Andover, the collection of stone tools obtained during the trips described in the preceding paper. It is my privilege to offer a description of these fascinating specimens together with some comments. In doing this I do not wish to divert attention from the task the Rogers' accomplished. The material and the accompanying information which they brought back is, and will …
An Archaeological Survey along the Alaska Highway, 1944
This is a brief, preliminary account of some of the discoveries made during the summer of 1944 when the author, in collaboration with botanists and a geologist conducted an archaeological survey of the region traversed by the Alaska Highway. The investigations were carried on in but a small section of an area, many thousands of square miles in extent, about which practically nothing was known. A similar survey had been made, in 1942, by Froelich …

Some Methods Used in Excavating Eastern Shell Heaps
This paper is intended as an aid for those conscientious amateur archaeologists who are interested in preserving their specimens and the data which goes with them. In answer to many questions, and in the hope that this paper may be of some help to those desiring to systematize their field methods, there are here set down some of the practices that have been applied to shell heap excavation with fair success
Problems Surrounding the Classification of Certain Culture Complexes in New England
Previously I have attempted to show that we lack, almost completely, archaeological data from large and apparently significant areas in New England. It is true also that the excavation and research which has been done to date is very incomplete. I regret to say, in addition, that a number of inaccuracies and important omissions have produced results, particularly in the development of theories, which are extremely untrustworthy. A reworking of th…
