    Open Access•Marta Coll-Florit•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2026

Suicide is a major public health concern worldwide that has been tackled from different disciplines, but it is a topic still practically unexplored by cognitive linguistics. The aim of this paper is to analyze the main conceptual metaphors used in the press to talk about suicide and its causes and prevention, and thereby increase the understanding of this topic and how the mass media treats it. Open Access•Marta Coll-Florit, Salvador Climent•ARTICLE•Metaphor and the Social World•2022

This study examines the use of metaphors of war and journey in a million-word corpus of Spanish-language blogs written by patients with severe mental disorders and by mental health professionals. Quantitative results indicate that both metaphors are more prevalent among patients than professionals, supporting the idea that they are mostly used in this context for communicating complex and emotionally intense experiences. Open Access•Marta Coll-Florit, Salvador Climent et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2021

This work analyzes the conceptual metaphors of depression in a corpus of 23 blogs written in Catalan by people suffering major depressive disorder. Its main aim was comparative, in order to check whether metaphors detected in previous studies were also used in a new genre and a new language. Their use was confirmed, thus reinforcing the metaphors’ relevance and their conceptual (i.e. non language-dependent) nature. Furthermore, the study broadens…

This study examines the use of metaphors, metonymies and metaphorical similes for love in a corpus of 52 year-end number one hit songs in the USA from 1946 to 2016 according to Billboard charts. The analysis is performed within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and from quantitative and qualitative perspectives. Our findings indicate that the theme of romantic love is prevalent in US mainstream pop music over the course of seven decades…

  • Orgullo loco y metáforas para una disidencia

    Open Access•Martín Correa-Urquiza, Martín Correa Urquiza et al.•ARTICLE•Salud Colectiva•2020

This paper presents a linguistic and interpretative analysis of the use of conceptual metaphors in the field of mental health, taking as a field of observation the use of Twitter in the first edition of Mad Pride Day in Spain, held on May 20, 2018. The objective is to give a first-person account of the attitudes expressed by activists.
