  • “Si no los comiéramos, no existirían”. Las implicaciones del problema de la no identidad para los animales (incluidos los humanos)

    Open Access•Sherry F Colb, Michael C Dorf•ARTICLE•Astrolabio•2024

  • Examining Perceptions of Uncertain Language in Potential E-Cigarette Warning Labels

Amelia Greiner Safi, Motasem Kalaji et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2024

E-cigarette use among youth presents a public health risk. Yet, cigarette smokers who substantially reduce their smoking or switch completely from traditional combustible cigarettes could benefit. As science about e-cigarettes is continually emerging, any potential warnings are likely to contain uncertain language. Hedged verbiage may impact decision making. To assess reactions, we conducted 16 online focus groups; 8 with youth (n = 32, grouped b…

  • Testing the effects of certain versus hypothetical language in health risk messages

Sherri Jean Katz, Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper tests how the certainty or hypotheticality conveyed through language can be harnessed to enhance the effectiveness of targeted messaging about health risks. We conducted two experiments with adult smokers ( n = 317) and middle school youth ( n = 321) from low-income communities in the context of pictorial cigarette warning labels. We manipulated hypotheticality of risk through verb modality: 1. non-modal (present tense, e.g., smoking c…

  • Strange Bedfellows

    Open Access•Michael C Dorf, Sidney Tarrow•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2014•Cited by: 39•References: 20

Since the 1980s, social movement scholars have investigated the dynamic of movement/countermovement interaction. Most of these studies posit movements as initiators, with countermovements reacting to their challenges. Yet sometimes a movement supports an agenda in response to a countermovement that engages in what we call “anticipatory countermobilization.” We interviewed ten leading LGBT activists to explore the hypothesis that the LGBT movement…

  • The Detention and Trial of Enemy Combatants

    Open Access•Michael C Dorf•ARTICLE•Political Science Quarterly•2007

Within a week of the attacks of 11 September 2001, the United States Congress authorized the President to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks... Although this Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) was not literally a declaration of war, President George W. Bush interpreted it as activating his full wartime po…

    Michael C Dorf•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2007

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum and research complex, encompassing 18 museums and galleries, along with the National Zoo and nine research centres. Despite statements from friendly chroniclers that the Smithsonian Institution has always been relatively free of political pressures, and the Smithsonian's own statement that it was an independent federal establishment, politics has always been a consideration in the Smithson…

  • The Orwellian Military Commissions Act of 2006

    Michael C Dorf•ARTICLE•Journal of International Criminal…•2005•Cited by: 1

In three decisions in 2004 and 2006, the Supreme Court of the United States rejected the sweeping claims by President Bush that his role as Commander in Chief entitled him to detain persons indefinitely and, if he chose, to subject them to war crimes trials before military commissions that did not have all of the procedural protections of courts martial. The Court's rulings, however, left open the possibility that, notwithstanding the treaty obli…
