Towards an Inclusive Research Framework for People Experiencing Homelessness
Individuals experiencing homelessness face significant health inequalities. They are often met with stigma and exclusion in everyday life, including in health and social care settings. As a result of this marginalisation, homeless populations can be unfairly labelled as ‘hard to reach’ and misrepresented in research. Public health research increasingly aims to address health inequalities by engaging vulnerable and excluded groups in the research …
Investigating the delivery of an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) smartphone app intervention on symptomology in adult IBS patients
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) significantly impacts patients and healthcare systems. While digital therapeutics show promise for IBS self-management, the feasibility of an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) smartphone app remains unexplored. This feasibility study recruited 53 participants across three UK Health Services to use an ACT app over 8 weeks. Pre- and post-treatment outcomes were assessed using standardized self-report questionnai…
Improving mental ill-health with psycho-social group interventions in South Asia–A scoping review using a realist lens
This scoping review aimed to synthesise current evidence related to psycho-social groups as part of community-based mental health interventions in South Asia. We used a realist lens to pay attention to the contexts and mechanisms supporting positive outcomes. We included studies published from January 2007 to February 2022 that: were based in communities in South Asia, included a group component, reported on interventions with a clear psychosocia…
Learning with friends and strangers
Collaborative learning with a familiar partner can reduce age-related differences in learning and memory compared to learning alone. This study compares younger and older adults' learning with familiar and unfamiliar partners to determine whether familiarity is beneficial for collaborative learning. Twenty-four younger adults aged 18-28 years and 24 older adults aged 60-80 years participated in familiar and unfamiliar pairs. Participants were ask…
Measuring the predictability of life outcomes with a scientific mass collaboration
How predictable are life trajectories? We investigated this question with a scientific mass collaboration using the common task method; 160 teams built predictive models for six life outcomes using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a high-quality birth cohort study. Despite using a rich dataset and applying machine-learning methods optimized for prediction, the best predictions were not very accurate and were only slightly…

When Semantics Meets Phonetics
A second-occurrence (SO) focus is the semantic focus of a focus-sensitive operator (e.g. only), but is a repeat of anearlier focused occurrence. We report onthe first systematic productionan d perception experiments to show that SO foci occurring after a nuclear accent are, as Rooth (1996b) has claimed, prosodically marked. We find that (i) there is no mean pitch rise on SO foci, (ii) SO foci are marked by longer duration and greater energy, and …
