  • Digital Democracy, Analogue Politics

Alcinda Manuel Honwana, Nanjala Nyabola et al.•BOOK•Digital Democracy, Analogue…•2018

Digital Democracy, Analogue Politics explores the drastic efforts being made by elites to contain online activism, as well as how ‘fake news’, a failed digital vote-counting system and the incumbent president’s recruitment of Cambridge Analytica contributed to tensions around the 2017 elections. Reframing digital democracy from the African perspective, Nyabola’s ground-breaking work opens up new ways of understanding our current global online era…

  • Africa uprising

Adam Branch, Alcinda Manuel Honwana et al.•BOOK•Africa uprising•2015

From Egypt to South Africa, Nigeria to Ethiopia, a new force for political change is emerging across Africa: popular protest. Widespread urban uprisings by youth, the unemployed, trade unions, activists, writers, artists, and religious groups are challenging injustice and inequality. What is driving this new wave of protest? Is it the key to substantive political change? Drawing on interviews and in-depth analysis, Adam Branch and Zachariah Mampi…

  • The great African land grab?

Alcinda Manuel Honwana, Lorenzo Cotula et al.•BOOK•The great African land grab?•2013

“Over the past few years, large-scale land acquisitions in Africa have stoked controversy, making headlines in media reports across the world. Land that only a short time ago seemed of little outside interest is now being sought by international investors to the tune of hundreds of thousands of hectares. Private-sector expectations of higher world food and commodity prices and government concerns about longer-term national food and energy securit…

  • Child survival during the 2002–2003 drought in Ethiopia

Open Access•Alexander De Waal, Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2006

Droughts in Ethiopia have commonly been associated with increased child mortality. Early indications were that the 2002/03 drought, which affected 13.2 million people, was no exception, despite a large relief operation. Humanitarian agencies reported sharp increases in child deaths and pockets of acute distress in some hard-hit localities. In response, the 2004 Ethiopia Child Survival Survey (ECSS) was designed to investigate the impact of the dr…

De Waal, a well-known activist and scholar of human rights in Africa, has put together a detailed, provocative book on the 1989, 2003 period, when Sudan and Somalia served as a laboratory for political Islam. De Waal and Sudanese human rights specialist A. H. Abdel Salam trace the failure and persistence of jihad and specific outcomes in Sudan. They argue that Islamists failed to overcome some major theoretical and practical weaknesses. The Somal…

  • Famine crimes

    Alexander De Waal•BOOK•Famine crimes•1997

Famine is preventable. The persistence of famine reflects political failings by African governments, western donors and international relief agencies. Can Africa avoid famine? When freedom from famine is a basic right or a political imperative, famine is prevented. Case studies from Ethiopia to Botswana demonstrate African successes - but they are often not acknowledged or repeated. Who is responsible for the failures? African generals and politi…

  • Constraints on weaning

Open Access•Astier M Almedom, Alexander De Waal•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1990

Evidence on infant weaning processes provided by field research in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and among a refugee population of Eritreans in the Sudan is presented. The study in Addis Ababa, where households were economically disadvantaged but the situation was nutritionally stable, allowed the identification of factors constraining weaning, which includes both the introduction of supplementary foods and the termination of breastfeeding. While the ti…
