El precio de la exclusión
The day after the rout of the Socialist Party (PSOE) at last November’s general election, the sympathetic daily El País could not resist some parthian ‘antifascist’ shots provided by a 107-year-old survivor of the civil war of 1936–9. During that epochal conflict, Spain’s Second Republic attained (sensu stricto) a universal iconic status. In historiographical terms, the template of an aspirant democratic Republic, with its rigid Socialist backbon…

The Correspondence of Alan Bush and John Ireland, 1927-1961
This volume is a monument to the skill, industry and dedication of its editor, Alan Bush's daughter, Rachel O'Higgins. It will be of lasting utility to historians of English music. The relationship it charts was an equal one, but for unequal reasons. When the correspondence began in 1927, Ireland was an established composer—a position he was to hold for another quarter-century. When Bush chose Ireland as his private tutor in 1922, he was almost e…
Moaist Revolution and the Spanish Civil War
THE Spanish general election of March 1996 was a close contest between the centre-left Socialist party (PSOE)—in power for more than thirteen years—and the centre-right Popular Party (PP). The previous decade had seen the development of an underlying consensus, both of principle and policy, between the main constituents of Spanish politics. During this period a mixed economy, liberalised public culture, equality of opportunity, progress towards s…

Prelude to Disaster; The Precipitation of the War of the Mantuan Succession, 1627–29
Cardinal Richelieu's spectacular military intervention in Italy in 1629 plunged his ministry into a desperate crisis from which it only narrowly emerged intact. It marked the definitive departure of France upon the difficult road of outright opposition to the Habsburg hegemony in Europe. This policy – as the cardinal well knew – was in many ways potentially counter-productive, with a risk factor so high that failure might well entail the end, not…

Olivares and the origins of the Franco—Spanish War, 1627–1635
I have just heard with extreme sorrow of the death of His Highness Duke Vicenzo... Deeply though I have respected all my patrons, I particularly had friendly feelings towards His Highness... because I hoped that by his kindness I might have the capital that provides my pension... but my fate, which has always been fickle rather than happy, has deigned to give me this great mortification
Spainapos;s Military Failure and the Supply of Horses, 1600–1660
A Spanish Statesman of Appeasement
In spite of the current renaissance of interest and research in the history of Habsburg Spain, very little of significance has yet appeared in English on the post-Olivares period of Spanish government and policy – the period in which the Spanish monarchy declined from a position of European hegemony to that of a second-rate power, the virtually helpless prey of her continental and maritime adversaries. The nineteenth-century histories of Dunlop a…
