  • Introduction

    Open Access•Craig Damian Smith, Craig M Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant & Refugee…•2023•References: 32

This introduction frames the Special Issue by describing the rapid changes around migration and migration governance in the Americas over the last years – including the Venezuelan exodus, COVID pandemic, impacts of U.S. policies, and bilateral labor migration. By "the Americas" we mean the entirety of the continent, from Canada to the Patagonia – a vast region connected by various migration systems and overlapping and segregated governance regime…

  • Population exposure to pre-emptive de-energization aimed at averting wildfires in Northern California

    Open Access•John T Abatzoglou, Craig M Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Recent extreme fire seasons in California have prompted utilities such as Pacific Gas and Electric to pre-emptively de-energize portions of the electrical grid during periods of extreme fire weather to reduce the risk of powerline-related fire ignitions. The policy was deployed in 2019, resulting in 12 million person-days of power outages and widespread societal disruption. Retrospective weather and vegetation moisture data highlight hotspots of …

  • In situ observations of the influence of a large onshore wind farm on near-surface temperature, turbulence intensity and wind speed profiles

    Open Access•Craig M Smith, R J Barthelmie et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

Observations of wakes from individual wind turbines and a multi-megawatt wind energy installation in the Midwestern US indicate that directly downstream of a turbine (at a distance of 190 m, or 2.4 rotor diameters ( D )), there is a clear impact on wind speed and turbulence intensity (TI) throughout the rotor swept area. However, at a downwind distance of 2.1 km (26 D downstream of the closest wind turbine) the wake of the whole wind farm is not …
