Burst flooding in Singapore
Urbanisation significantly alters the interaction between land surface and the lower troposphere, impacting occurrences of natural hazards. The influence of urbanisation on natural hazards like heatwaves, hailstorms, and flooding remains debated. However, it is well established that impervious surfaces in urban areas can lead to flooding amplification. Singapore, amidst rapid urbanisation, experiences frequent flooding, exacerbated by its tropica…
Covariability of decadal surface air temperature variability over Myanmar with sea surface temperature based on singular value decomposition analysis
The Myanmar’ Southeast Asian country is currently experiencing environmental changes, with temperature change being one the major contributing factors. Although many studies have shown the contribution of anthropogenic activities, the factors sustaining the observed increase in air temperature (TEMP) are not fully understood. We examined the interdependence of the surface TEMP with the sea surface temperature (SST) from 1971 to 2020 on a decadal …
Significant advancement in subseasonal-to-seasonal summer precipitation ensemble forecast skills in China mainland through an innovative hybrid CSG-Unet method
Reliable Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) forecasts of precipitation are critical for disaster prevention and mitigation. In this study, an innovative hybrid method CSG-UNET combining the UNET with the censored and shifted gamma distribution based ensemble model output statistic (CSG-EMOS), is proposed to calibrate the ensemble precipitation forecasts from ECMWF over the China mainland during boreal summer. Additional atmospheric variable forecasts …
Future changes in precipitation extremes over Southeast Asia
Past assessments of coupled climate models have indicated that precipitation extremes are expected to intensify over Southeast Asia (SEA) under the global warming. Here, we use outputs from 15 climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) to evaluate projected changes in precipitation extremes for SEA at the end of the 21st century. The results suggest that CMIP6 multi-model ensemble medians show better performance…
Risks of precipitation extremes over Southeast Asia
Guided by the target of the Paris Agreement of 2015, it is fundamental to identify regional climate responses to global warming of different magnitudes for Southeast Asia (SEA), a tropical region where human society is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Projected changes in indices characterizing precipitation extremes of the 1.5 C and 2 C global warming levels (GWLs) exceeding pre-industrial conditions are analyzed, comparing the referen…
