  • Integrating satellite-based forest disturbance alerts improves detection timeliness and confidence

Open Access•Johannes Reiche, Johannes Balling et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Satellite-based near-real-time forest disturbance alerting systems have been widely used to support law enforcement actions against illegal and unsustainable human activities in tropical forests. The availability of multiple optical and radar-based forest disturbance alerts, each with varying detection capabilities depending mainly on the satellite sensor used, poses a challenge for users in selecting the most suitable system for their monitoring…

  • Intra-annual relationship between precipitation and forest disturbance in the African rainforest

Open Access•Yaqing Gou, Johannes Balling et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Analysis of forest disturbance patterns in relation to precipitation seasonality is important for understanding African tropical forest dynamics under changing climate conditions and different levels of human activities. Newly available radar-based forest disturbance information now enables an investigation of the intra-annual relationship between precipitation and forest disturbance in a spatially and temporally explicit manner, especially in th…

  • Forest disturbance alerts for the Congo Basin using Sentinel-1

Open Access•Johannes Reiche, Adugna Mullissa et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

A humid tropical forest disturbance alert using Sentinel-1 radar data is presented for the Congo Basin. Radar satellite signals can penetrate through clouds, allowing Sentinel-1 to provide gap-free observations for the tropics consistently every 6–12 days at 10 m spatial scale. In the densely cloud covered Congo Basin, this represents a major advantage for the rapid detection of small-scale forest disturbances such as subsistence agriculture and …

  • Analysis of land-use scenarios for urban sustainable development: A case study of Lijiang City

Rencai Dong, Hong Xu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011

A scientific approach to urban planning is required to ensure environmental protection and ecological sustainability. This paper presents a range of urban land-use scenarios and their implications for urban development and economic demand in the Old Town of Lijiang. Using geographic information system (GIS) and questionnaire analysis, three future urban planning scenarios were created based on data and storylines for the Lijiang region. In all sc…

  • Assessment of urban ecological risk from spatial interaction models for Lijiang City

Ming Liu, Liu Ming et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011

Rapid growth in land use has caused problems such as waste of natural resources, geological disasters and damage to heritage through the social, economic and environmental impacts of urban sprawl. In this paper, a new model and index system of urban ecological risk assessment (ERA) based on geographic information system (GIS) was built. To identify and classify urban ecological risk factors, three crucial parameters are described: land use featur…
