  • In temperate Europe, fire is already here: The case of The Netherlands

    Open Access•Cathelijne R Stoof, Edwin Kok et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 26

Landscape fires are usually not associated with temperate Europe, yet not all temperate countries record statistics indicating that actual risks remain unknown. Here we introduce new wildfire statistics for The Netherlands, and summarize significant events and fatalities. The period 2017–2022 saw 611 wildfires and 405 ha burned per year, which Copernicus’ European Forest Fire Information System satellite data vastly underestimate. Fires burned mo…

  • Do climate teleconnections modulate wildfire-prone conditions over the Iberian Peninsula

Open Access•Marcos Rodrigues, Marylene Santos Rodrigues et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Climate teleconnections (CT) synchronize and influence weather features such as temperature, precipitation and, subsequently, drought and fuel moisture in many regions across the globe. CTs thus may be related to cycles in wildfire activity, and thereby help fire managers to anticipate fire-prone weather conditions as well as envisaging their future evolution. A wide number of CTs modulate weather in the Iberian Peninsula (IP), exerting different…

  • Recent deforestation drove the spike in Amazonian fires

    Open Access•Adrián Cardíl, Sergio De‐miguel et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Tropical forests are of global importance even though they only cover around 10% of the Earth's land surface. They store large amounts of carbon and host between one-half and two-thirds of the world's species (Lewis 2006). Small changes in the tropical moist forest—the most biodiverse biome within the tropical forests—may lead to global impacts on climate dynamics and warming, water cycles, and the loss of biodiversity. If the current rates of de…
