  • Overview of the MosaiC expedition

Open Access•Matthew D Shupe, Markus Rex et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2022

With the Arctic rapidly changing, the needs to observe, understand, and model the changes are essential. To support these needs, an annual cycle of observations of atmospheric properties, processes, and interactions were made while drifting with the sea ice across the central Arctic during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. An international team desig…

  • Meteorological conditions during the MosaiC expedition

Open Access•Annette Rinke, John J Cassano et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2021

This article sets the near-surface meteorological conditions during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate expedition in the context of the interannual variability and extremes within the past 4 decades. Hourly ERA5 reanalysis data for the Polarstern trajectory for 1979–2020 are analyzed. The conditions were relatively normal given that they were mostly within the interquartile range of the preceding 4 decades.…

  • How do intermittency and simultaneous processes obfuscate the Arctic influence on midlatitude winter extreme weather events

    Open Access•James E Overland, Thomas J Ballinger et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Pronounced changes in the Arctic environment add a new potential driver of anomalous weather patterns in midlatitudes that affect billions of people. Recent studies of these Arctic/midlatitude weather linkages, however, state inconsistent conclusions. A source of uncertainty arises from the chaotic nature of the atmosphere. Thermodynamic forcing by a rapidly warming Arctic contributes to weather events through changing surface heat fluxes and lar…

  • Arctic moisture source for Eurasian snow cover variations in autumn

Open Access•Martin Wegmann, Yvan Orsolini et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

Eurasian fall snow cover changes have been suggested as a driver for changes in the Arctic Oscillation and might provide a link between sea-ice decline in the Arctic during summer and atmospheric circulation in the following winter. However, the mechanism connecting snow cover in Eurasia to sea-ice decline in autumn is still under debate. Our analysis is based on snow observations from 820 Russian land stations, moisture transport using a Lagrang…
