Distribution and bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Hg, Cd and Pb) in fish
Mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are toxic metals that continue to attract much attention because they are prone to be accumulated in fish tissues and can harm human health if taken up with food. Data acquired by studying the bioaccumulation of these metals in the various fish species from water bodies along a latitudinal gradient in Russia (from northern Arctic lakes to the southern mouth segments of the Volga River) are utilized to iden…
Metal bioavailability in northern low-salinity water
This paper presents metal speciation calculations that are based on mathematical modelling of chemical reactions in natural waters. Metal concentrations (Hg, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, Al, Sr) were determined, and their speciation in water were calculated for 22 water areas in the Kola region. Meanwhile, the accumulation of metals in fish organs and tissues was studied (e.g. whitefish). The biogeochemical activity of metals determines the proportions of lab…
Aquatic environment and anthropogenic factor effects on distribution of trace elements in surface waters of European Russia and Western Siberia
The distribution of trace elements of anthropogenic origin, especially toxic metals, is an environmental problem. We present the first results of research into the geochemistry of lake waters and metallic pollution in European Russia (ER) and Western Siberia (WS), based on a survey of 367 lakes from the tundra to the steppe zones. The content of more than 80 elements in the lake water was studied; the influence of airborne contamination and the g…
Present status of water chemistry and acidification under nonpoint sources of pollution across European Russia and West Siberia
Acidic deposition has caused severe surface water acidification in Europe and North America, but surface water acidification has not been systematically studied in Russia. Here we present the first detailed study on regional surface water acidification in European Russia (ER) and Western Siberia (WS) based on a survey of 367 lakes in a transect from the tundra to the steppe, which were investigated to explore the status and mechanism of surface w…
Ecosystem and human health assessment in relation to aquatic environment pollution by heavy metals
Throughout the Euro-Arctic region of Russia (Murmansk region), there is a substantial increase of metal concentrations in water, which are related to local discharges from the metallurgical and mining industry, transboundary pollution, as well as indirect leaching of elements by acid precipitation. This study collates data to investigate the relationship between surface water contamination by metals, and fish and human health. Fish are used as a …
Understanding Human and Ecosystem Dynamics in the Kola Arctic
The Lake Imandra watershed is located in one of the most developed regions in the Arctic - the Kola Peninsula of Russia. Approximately 300 000 people live on the roughly 27 000 km2 watershed, making it one of the most densely populated areas of the Arctic. Most of the people are involved in large-scale mineral extraction and processing and the infrastructure needed to support this industry. This paper reports the results of a pilot project staged…
Heavy Metal Surveys in Nordic Lakes; Concentrations, Geographic Patterns and Relation to Critical Limits
In the autumn of 1995, coordinated national lake surveys were conducted in the Nordic countries, including Russian Kola. The 11 metals (Pb, Cd, As, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Cr, V) investigated in nearly 3000 lakes have generally low concentrations and distinct geographical patterns. Direct and indirect influence of long-range transported air pollution is the major important factor for distribution of Pb, Cd, Zn and to a certain degree Co. Total or…
