Drought-vulnerable vegetation increases exposure of disadvantaged populations to heatwaves under global warming: A case study from Los Angeles
Guiding principles for using satellite-derived maps in rangeland management
Rangeland management has entered a new era with the accessibility and advancement of satellite-derived maps. Maps provide a comprehensive view of rangelands in space and time, and challenge us to think critically about natural variability. Here, we advance the practice of using satellite-derived maps with four guiding principles designed to increase end user confidence and thereby accessibility of these data for decision-making
Relating variation of dust on snow to bare soil dynamics in the western United States
The deposition of desert dust to mountain snow directly impacts the hydrologic cycle and water resource management through the depression of snow albedo and acceleration of snowmelt. However, the key processes that control the variation of dust deposition to snow are poorly understood. Here we relate the bare soil exposure from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) reflectance data for the period of 2002–2011, with dust loadin…
Landform influences on the resistance of grasslands to shrub encroachment, Northern Chihuahuan Desert, USA
In arid and semiarid regions, vegetative boundaries are often strikingly similar to landform boundaries. However, it is not well documented whether landforms exert an influence on the resistance of desert grassland to shrub encroachment. Dominant grassland communities have been displaced by woody shrubs over the last 150 years in the Jornada Basin, southern New Mexico. Digital vegetation maps from 1858, 1915–1916, 1928–1929, 1938, and 1998, in co…
The Southern Kalahari: A potential new dust source in the Southern Hemisphere
Most sources of atmospheric dust on Earth are located in the Northern Hemisphere. The lower dust emissions in the Southern Hemisphere in part limit the supply of micronutrients (primarily soluble iron) to the Southern Ocean, thereby constraining its productivity. Climate and land use change can alter the current distribution of dust source regions on Earth. Can new dust sources be activated in the Southern Hemisphere? Here we show that vegetation…
