Geohazard features of the Ligurian Sea
We present the characterization of geohazard-related features of the Ligurian Sea with the map of its physiographic domains (1:250,000 scale) and five maps (1:100,000 scale) of the morphological and morpho-bathymetric elements. These were realized in the framework of the MaGIC (Marine Geohazard along Italian Coasts) project, promoted by the Italian Civil Protection Department. The characterization of submarine geohazards along continental margins…
D Modelling of Late Quaternary coastal evolution between Albenga and Loano (Western Liguria, Italy)
Seismic lines and sediment cores collected along the shelf between Albenga and Loano (Liguria, NW Italy) allowed an unprecedented reconstruction of the characters and distribution of late Quaternary transgressive littoral deposits. Multiple seismic lines datasets and stratigraphic logs were managed within a single, GIS-based software. This approach allowed the merging, analysis, and interpretation of multimethodological datasets, greatly increasi…
Unprecedented snow-drought conditions in the Italian Alps during the early 2020s
Snow represents a fundamental water resource for mountain and lowland areas. Changes in the frequency and magnitude of snow droughts can significantly impact societies and ecosystems that rely on snowmelt to satisfy their water demands. Here we documented and quantified the snow drought that affected the Italian Alps during the early 2020s. We used 15 long-term snow-depth series (period 1930–2023, elevation range: 864–2200 m a.s.l.) to simulate t…
Structural geology of Ganymede regional groove systems (60°N–60°S)
Brittle deformation on Ganymede surface is represented by grooves tectonic linear landforms. These are regional scale structures that show well-defined morphology from straight to curvilinear. High density of grooves occupies most of the light terrain of the satellite, the grooved terrain. We map grooves on the USGS Voyager and Galileo Mosaic of Ganymede in order to unravel their spatial distribution and tectonic setting. A total of 14,707 groove…
