Ghost in the shell
The notion of constitutional identity rests on a seemingly inevitable tension: it is seen both as a source of inclusive social cohesion and as a potentially exclusionary concept invoked to justify populist claims and divergent interpretations of the rule of law and human rights. This has led legal scholars to redirect the understanding of constitutional identity towards an exclusively legal and functional definition in line with the formulation o…
Identity and difference
This article offers a critical literature review on the debate on constitutional identity, combining a synthesis of existing literature with a critical reframing of the concept’s theoretical and methodological foundations. While constitutional identity has become increasingly prominent in legal and political debates – particularly within the European Union – its meanings and functions remain contested. The article develops a typology of approache…
Model exploration of microplastic effects on zooplankton grazing reveal potential impacts on the global carbon cycle
Amongst the increasing number of anthropogenic stress factors threatening ocean equilibrium, microplastics (MP; 50 mg m −3 . Despite their oligotrophic nature and limited contribution to the overall ocean carbon cycle, MP impacts on zooplankton grazing could disrupt carbon cycling in these highly contaminated regions (up to 50% reduction in yearly primary production, carbon export fluxes and organic matter remineralisation after 100 years). Our r…

‘The Nation will always prevail’, Representation, participation and contestation in the Belgian Constitution of 1831
The exact nature of the concept of sovereignty enshrined by the Belgian Constitution of 1831 has recently become the object of academic debate. This article takes a stand in this debate by analyzing the representative system instated by the constituent National Congress. It is argued that the congressmen attributed primacy to the legislative Chamber because it concentrated in its midst all the individual wills of the people in order to express th…
The physical oceanography of the transport of floating marine debris
Marine plastic debris floating on the ocean surface is a major environmental problem. However, its distribution in the ocean is poorly mapped, and most of the plastic waste estimated to have entered the ocean from land is unaccounted for. Better understanding of how plastic debris is transported from coastal and marine sources is crucial to quantify and close the global inventory of marine plastics, which in turn represents critical information f…
