  • Moving On

    Stephen J Walker•ARTICLE•Midland History•2026

George Robinson and sons developed a complex of cotton spinning factories in the Leen Valley, north of Nottingham, in the late eighteenth century. For fifty years, after 1778, the firm produced cotton yarn. Many of the workers originated elsewhere, and when the business collapsed, in 1828, they dispersed. Previous research examining the Robinson enterprise has focussed on describing the infrastructure and company history. In this study, some pers…

  • Shotgun Metagenomic Sequencing Identifies Dysbiosis in Triplet Sibling with Gastrointestinal Symptoms and ASD

    Open Access•Sabine Hazan, Kimberly D Spradling‐Reeves et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2020

The gut microbiome profile of a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and co-occurring gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms was compared to that of her healthy triplet siblings to determine if she exhibited intestinal dysbiosis. Shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed in individual fecal samples, and relative microbial abundance and diversity was determined. Microbial diversity was lower in sibling #3, coupled with a higher Bacteroidetes/Firmi…

  • Assessing fossil fuel CO 2 emissions in California using atmospheric observations and models

    Open Access•Heather Graven, M L Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Analysis systems incorporating atmospheric observations could provide a powerful tool for validating fossil fuel CO 2 (ffCO 2 ) emissions reported for individual regions, provided that fossil fuel sources can be separated from other CO 2 sources or sinks and atmospheric transport can be accurately accounted for. We quantified ffCO 2 by measuring radiocarbon ( 14 C) in CO 2 , an accurate fossil-carbon tracer, at nine observation sites in Californi…

  • Genetic Polymorphisms of the IL‐1α and IL‐1β Genes in African‐American LJP Patients and an African‐American Control Population

    Open Access•Stephen J Walker, Thomas E Van Dyke et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Periodontology•2000

Background: A functional polymorphism of the interleukin‐1 beta (IL‐1β) gene has been proposed to be a risk factor for periodontitis. In adult forms of periodontitis, non‐smokers of northern European heritage carrying the “2” allele of the IL‐1α‐889 and the IL‐1β +3953 RFLPs in either the heterozygous or the homozyous state at both loci were observed to have a greater risk for developing severe periodontitis. Studies of early‐onset periodontitis …
