  • Attribution of drought trends on the Mongolian Plateau over the past decades

Open Access•Yulan Li, Hainan Gong et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

The Mongolian Plateau (MP) has undergone a significant drought trend in recent decades, presenting a substantial threat to local ecosystems and environments. The debate persists on whether this observed drought trend stems from external forcings or is a result of internal variability. Utilizing the large-ensemble simulations of the climate model and dynamical adjustment method, we have identified that the atmospheric circulation anomalies are the…

  • Evolution of the East Asian winter land temperature trends during 1961–2018

Open Access•Hainan Gong, Lin Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Detecting the contributions of internal variability and external forcing to the evolution of surface air temperature (SAT) trend at regional scales is a challenge. Based on the observations and large-ensemble simulations of climate models, we estimate the contribution of the internal and forced components to the evolution of East Asian winter land SAT (EAWT) during 1961–2018. Although the external forcing induced EAWT trends show a slow increase,…

  • Chinese blue days

Open Access•Su Wang, Gang Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

As part of the Blue-Sky Protection Campaign, we develop the Chinese Blue Days Index based on meteorology data from 385 stations in China during 1980–2014. This index is defined as the days with no rain, low cloud cover ≤75th percentile, and visibility ≥15 km at 2 pm. The spatio-temporal variations and possible driving factors of Chinese Blue Days (CBD) are further investigated, revealing a steadily rising rate of 1.6 day (d)/10 year (y) for the n…

  • Biases of the wintertime Arctic Oscillation in CMIP5 models

Open Access•Hainan Gong, Lin Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Distinct biases are found in the pattern and teleconnections of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) in 32 climate models that participate the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). Compared with observations, the Pacific (Atlantic) center of AO is excessively strong (weak) in most of the 32 CMIP5 models, and the AO-related surface air temperature anomalies are generally weak over the Eurasian continent and North America. These biases are …
