The biogenic sulfur cycle in the coupled ocean–sea ice–atmosphere system
Polar oceans and sea-ice regions are global hot spots for the production of biogenic volatile methylated sulfur (VMS) compounds: dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and methanethiol (MeSH). VMS compounds make important contributions to atmospheric particle formation and cloud property modulation, especially when polar atmospheres are pristine. As a result, the polar biogenic sulfur cycle may induce significant climate feedback in response to ongoing sea ice d…
Untangling the influence of Antarctic and Southern Ocean life on clouds
Polar environments are among the fastest changing regions on the planet. It is a crucial time to make significant improvements in our understanding of how ocean and ice biogeochemical processes are linked with the atmosphere. This is especially true over Antarctica and the Southern Ocean where observations are severely limited and the environment is far from anthropogenic influences. In this commentary, we outline major gaps in our knowledge, eme…
Key challenges for tropospheric chemistry in the Southern Hemisphere
This commentary paper from the recently formed International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) Southern Hemisphere Working Group outlines key issues in atmospheric composition research that particularly impact the Southern Hemisphere. In this article, we present a broad overview of many of the challenges for understanding atmospheric chemistry in the Southern Hemisphere, before focusing in on the most significant factors that differentiate it f…
Future evolution of surface solar radiation and photovoltaic potential in Europe
In recent decades, trends in photovoltaic (PV) technology deployment have shown an overall increase across the world. Comprehensive knowledge of the solar resource and its future evolution is demanded by the energy sector. Solar resource and PV potential have been estimated in several studies using both the global climate model (GCM) and regional climate model (RCM), revealing a GCM–RCM discrepancy in the projected change over Europe. An increase…

The study of aerosols in the troposphere and in the stratosphere is of major importance both for climate and air quality studies. Among the numerous instruments available, aerosol particles counters provide the size distribution in diameter range from few hundreds of nm to few tens of μm. Most of them are very sensitive to the nature of aerosols, and this can result in significant biases in the retrieved size distribution. We describe here a new …
Intense dust and extremely fresh biomass burning outbreak in Barcelona, Spain
An extremely fresh smoke plume (<5 h) was transported over Barcelona on 23 July 2009, just 5 h after an intense Saharan dust event finalized. Both events were observed by sun-photometer, lidar and satellite systems. Results indicate surprisingly large absorption of mixed dust particles (SSA ~ 0.83 ± 0.04) with lower SSA than that observed for smoke (0.86 ± 0.04) particles at 440 nm. Our investigation shows that dust particles may have mixed durin…
