Blue Carbon Ecosystems in Malaysia – Status, Threats, and the Way Forward for Research and Policy
Malaysia hosts some of the most productive blue carbon ecosystems globally. Here we review the status of and known threats faced by local mangroves and seagrass and examine conservation prospects using carbon financing. Based on lessons learnt from blue carbon projects worldwide, Malaysia needs to address governance and financing hurdles that include clarifying land tenureship, ensuring local community involvement and benefits, and obtaining sust…
Environmental quality and carrying capacity for restoration of estuarine mangrove ecosystem in the coral triangle ecoregion, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia
The present study determines the environmental quality and carrying capacity for the restoration of the degraded mangroves in Southeast Sulawesi. The physico-chemical conditions of estuarine water and its sediment nutrient contents were determined in both protected and unprotected areas, with no significant difference (p > 0.05) except for nitrogen and inorganic carbon contents of water. The current study found promising environments for the rest…
Carbon stocks and fluxes in Asia-Pacific mangroves: Current knowledge and gaps
Mangrove forest plays a key role in regulating climate change, earth carbon cycling and other biogeochemical processes within blue carbon ecosystems. Therefore, mangrove forests should be incorporated into Earth system climate models with the aim of understanding future climate change. Despite multiple carbon stock and flux assessments taking place over the past couple of decades, concrete knowledge of carbon source/sink patterns is largely lacki…
The role of predictive model data in designing mangrove forest carbon programs
Estimating baseline carbon stocks is a key step in designing forest carbon programs. While field inventories are resource-demanding, advances in predictive modeling are now providing globally coterminous datasets of carbon stocks at high spatial resolutions that may meet this data need. However, it remains unknown how well baseline carbon stock estimates derived from model data compare against conventional estimation approaches such as field inve…
