  • Urban heat mitigation under realistic roof and land area constraints

    Open Access•Harsh Kamath, Tzu-Shun Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2026

To simulate realistic impact of rooftop-based heat mitigation strategies (HMS), we introduce a new capability in the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the building effect parameterization urban physics module. This enhancement allows the model to ingest two dimensional fields of grid aggregated roof albedo and fractional rooftop area availability for HMS implementation. By incorporating these spatially varying inputs, the model …

  • Global expansion of wildland-urban interface (WUI) and WUI fires

Open Access•Wenfu Tang, Cenlin He et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Fires in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) are an important issue globally. To understand the change of WUI, we develop a 9 km worldwide unified wildland-urban interface database for 2001–2020 with Random Forest models and satellite data. We find that WUI has been increasing in all populated continents from 2001 to 2020 and the global relative increase is 24%, with the largest relative increase (∼59%) over Africa. Global total fire counts decrea…

  • Winter and spring climate explains a large portion of interannual variability and trend in western U.S. summer fire burned area

    Open Access•Ronnie Abolafia‐Rosenzweig, Cenlin He et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

This study predicts summer (June–September) fire burned area across the western United States (U.S.) from 1984 to 2020 using ensembles of statistical models trained with pre-fire season climate conditions. Winter and spring climate conditions alone explain up to 53% of the interannual variability and 58% of the increasing trend of observed summer burned area, which suggests that climate conditions in antecedent seasons have been an important driv…
