  • Visegrad Group Co‐operation and Russia

    Open Access•Martin Dangerfield•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2012•Cited by: 10•References: 7

Much thought has been given of late to how national preferences impact upon European Union‐level policy‐making towards Russia and it is widely accepted that discrepancies in Member State attitudes can undermine consistent and effective multilateral policies. So far there has been no attempt to ascertain whether subregional groupings that exist inside the EU (which represent a potential in‐between layer of policy‐making between the bilateral and m…

  • Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine

    Martin Dangerfield•ARTICLE•Journal of European Integration•2011•References: 2

For the Western Newly Independent States (WNIS) of Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine a ‘European choice’ (defined as the aspiration to join Euro‐Atlantic structures) remains an ambiguous opportunity. NATO enlargement is now firmly off the agenda, leaving the future status of the WNIS mainly dependent on engagement with the EU. Critics of the EU’s ‘eastern’ policy — often referred to as ‘enlargement lite’ — contend that it risks leaving the WNIS on the…

  • The Contribution of the Visegrad Group to the European Union's ‘Eastern’ Policy

    Martin Dangerfield•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2009•Cited by: 13•References: 4

I am indebted to various government personnel whose kind assistance was crucial in enabling me to carry out the necessary research for this essay. In particular officials from the Central European

  • The Visegrád Group in the Expanded European Union

    Open Access•Martin Dangerfield•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•2008•Cited by: 15•References: 1

This article investigates whether the Visegrád Group (VG) is proving capable of a successful transition from preaccession to postaccession cooperation in the expanded European Union (EU). Prior to EU accession, the VG agenda mainly emphasised political cooperation around strategic goals of EU and NATO membership, acting as an incubation chamber and the organising framework for joint policies and actions. The article finds that pessimistic prognos…

  • The European Union and Post-Communist Europe

    Martin Dangerfield•ARTICLE•Journal of Communist Studies•2007

Many believe that the European Union, even if it has not caused a new division of Europe, has been complicit in the creation of such a division by virtue of different strategies towards alternative groups of post-communist countries. However, have the 'Europeanization' prospects of 'left-out' countries in fact already been predetermined by the alternative strategies of the EU. A number of key questions arise in this context. Is 'inclusion' really…

  • Subregional Integration and EU Enlargement

    Open Access•Martin Dangerfield•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2006•Cited by: 2

The fifth enlargement of the EU has necessitated various adjustments to the pan‐European trade and integration framework. This article discusses ways in which the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) has been affected by this process. What was CEFTA's role in the EU pre‐accession process? How did CEFTA downsizing affect trade arrangements between the enlarged EU and the remaining CEFTA members? Also, how realistic is the idea that the en…

  • Cefta

    Martin Dangerfield•ARTICLE•Journal of European Integration•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 1

This article uses the CEFTA experience to explore interactions between subregional integration and the EU pre‐accession process. It covers the following issues. What contributions did CEFTA make to the EU membership endeavour? In which ways did the EU membership drive impact on the subregional cooperation process? Were restrictions on the form of integration applied (basic trade liberalisation in the CEFTA case) a conscious choice or are there in…

  • Ideology and the Czech Transformation

    Open Access•Martin Dangerfield•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•1997•Cited by: 9

As true liberals, we should start with a very heavy dose of monetarist medicine—with economic policy measures, not with formal institutional reform—because with “easy money” no real changes in economic behavior of any agents can be achieved. Václav Klaus and Tomas Ježek, December 1989
