Seasonal evolution patterns of Arctic sea ice and their connection to tropical Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies
This study applies the self-organizing map method to identify the primary modes of seasonal evolution in Arctic sea ice concentration anomalies from 1979 to 2023. The resulting patterns fall into two broad categories: negative sea ice anomalies, occurring more frequently after 2005, and positive anomalies, more common prior to 2005. Differences among the modes within each category are primarily driven by sea ice variability in the Bering Sea, Sea…
Satellite observations reveal a significant poleward expansion of the multiyear sea ice replenishment in the heart region of Arctic Ocean
Multiyear sea ice replenishment due to first-year ice aging at the end of the summer is a key factor in maintaining the overall Arctic sea ice mass balance. Utilizing satellite observations from 2000 to 2023, here we show that a significant poleward shift in the multiyear ice replenishment occurs in the north pole region (NPR) of the Arctic (north of 80 ̊N). The large-scale atmospheric circulation mode, characterized by an extensive and persisten…
Multidecadal variations in North Atlantic SSTs modulate the relationship between Enso and the South Atlantic Subtropical Dipole since 1900
This study investigates the long-term variability of the relationship between the El Niño South/Oscillation (ENSO) and the South Atlantic Subtropical Dipole (SASD), and their connection to multidecadal variations in the North Atlantic sea surface temperature (MDV-SST). Using a century’s worth of SST and atmospheric data and the Community Atmosphere Model version 5, the study found significant interdecadal variability in the correlation between th…
The convolutional neural network for Pacific decadal oscillation forecast
The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) is often described as a long-lived El Niño-like pattern of Pacific climate variability, and it has widespread climate and ecosystem impacts. PDO forecasts can provide useful information for policymakers on how to handle PDO impacts. Nevertheless, due to the long duration of the PDO cycles and their complex formation mechanisms, it remains a challenge to predict long lead time PDO. In this paper, we propose a …
Seasonal evolution modes of tropical sea surface temperature anomalies and their links to antarctic sea ice anomalies
Previous studies have explored the teleconnections between variability of Antarctic sea ice cover and tropical sea surface temperature (SST) across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean basins, typically focusing on each basin individually. However, there has been limited investigation into the impact of tropical SSTs—particularly from a seasonal evolution perspective—on Antarctic sea ice cover. In this study, we employ the self-organizing map …
Linking Arctic stratospheric polar vortex weakening to rising CO 2 -induced intensification of the Indo-Pacific warm pool during the past five decades
Accompanying the global rise in greenhouse gas emissions, a warming trend in the Indo-Pacific warm pool (IPWP) has exerted a discernible influence on tropical atmosphere–ocean interactions. However, the impact of this intensification of the IPWP on the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex (ASPV) remains unclear. In this study, we revealed a link between the changes in the IPWP and ASPV during the early winter months, with nearly half of the weakenin…
Linking the Antarctic sea ice extent changes during 1979–2020 to seasonal modes of Antarctic sea ice variability
The Antarctic sea ice extent slowly expanded through the four-decade-long satellite era until 2014 when the expansion came to a halt, followed by a rapid contraction in the next couple of years. This sudden unexpected trend reversal has sparked considerable research interest and several mechanisms have been proposed to explain it; however, much remains to be explored. In this study, we show that the long-term increasing trend in the Antarctic sea…
Unprecedented Arctic sea ice thickness loss and multiyear-ice volume export through Fram Strait during 2010–2011
The satellite-observed sea ice thickness (SIT) records from 2003 to 2020 identify an extreme SIT loss during 2010–2011. Ice thickness budget analysis demonstrates that the thickness loss was associated with an extraordinarily large multiyear ice (MYI) volume export through the Fram Strait during the season of sea ice advance. High cloudiness led to positive anomalies of net longwave radiation, and positive net surface energy flux anomalies suppor…
Contribution of large-scale circulation anomalies to changes in extreme precipitation frequency in the United States
The mean global climate has warmed as a result of the increasing emission of greenhouse gases induced by human activities. This warming is considered the main reason for the increasing number of extreme precipitation events in the US. While much attention has been given to extreme precipitation events occurring over several days, which are usually responsible for severe flooding over a large region, little is known about how extreme precipitation…
