The more you have, the more you want? Analysis of household material stocks and footprints
A large share of material flows and stocks in modern economies serve household needs, either directly through consumption or indirectly through supporting infrastructure and services. We show how household stocks (dwellings, holiday homes, and cars) correlate to household material footprints, combining accumulated material stocks with input-output analysis for footprints in a cross-sectional framework. Larger household stocks are associated with …
Retrofitting Norwegian residential buildings
The retrofit of buildings is essential to reduce their energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this study, the resource use and energy performance of various retrofit options for Norway’s residential buildings up to 2050 were quantified. A comprehensive analysis of the stock, encompassing all municipalities and using an archetype-based dynamic stock model, was developed. It was estimated that about 80% of Norway’s bui…
Reducing material use and their greenhouse gas emissions in Greater Oslo
Resource efficiency strategies are key to reduce material use and help limit global warming to below 2°C in 2100. Understanding the role of such strategies at the municipal level requires a localized approach. Here we evaluate a ramp‐up of resource efficiency strategies and their associated effects on car use and climate benefits toward 2050 for 19 individual subregions within the Greater Oslo region in Norway. In our scenarios, material stocks i…
Material and energy use in Norway's residential building archetypes
Buildings require substantial amounts of resources, as both construction materials and operational energy. In Norway, as buildings become more energy efficient due to advancements in construction, technology, and stricter regulations, the relative impact of construction and maintenance materials rises. However, there is a lack of comprehensive data on construction and material use, and consequently, their embodied emissions. While some studies ex…
Norway’s electric vehicle revolution
Electric vehicles (EVs) are a key strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from personal mobility. Norway’s strong EV supporting policies has led to an explosion of EVs and reduced direct emissions, but with rural-urban differences and undocumented upstream impacts. We investigated how the material composition and life cycle GHG emissions of Norwegian vehicles have evolved between 2000 and 2023 by integrating spatiotemporal vehicle …
