Upper-ocean variability in the Amundsen Basin of the Arctic Ocean during early winter
Wintertime observations in the central Arctic Ocean are sparse. We report a unique early winter data set containing atmospheric, hydrographic, and ocean velocity observations obtained during the first leg of the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition, with sea ice concentration at nearly 100%. One storm and four other periods of strong wind were encountered during the drift. This work focuses on…
Bathymetry-constrained ocean geostrophic currents play a key role in shaping the sea ice circulation in the Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean
Satellite-based observations and a pan-Arctic coupled sea ice-ocean model are utilized to study the effect of ocean geostrophic currents on large-scale sea ice circulation in the Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean. We find that surface winds primarily drive sea ice drifts in the west–east direction, while the geostrophic currents in the Beaufort Gyre promote north–south ice drifts. Wind fluctuations can create variable ice drifts, yet geostrophic current…
Overview of the MosaiC expedition
Arctic Ocean properties and processes are highly relevant to the regional and global coupled climate system, yet still scarcely observed, especially in winter. Team OCEAN conducted a full year of physical oceanography observations as part of the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of the Arctic Climate (MOSAiC), a drift with the Arctic sea ice from October 2019 to September 2020. An international team designed and implemented the…
