Observation of CH 4 , CO and N 2 O in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere over the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau
The Asian summer monsoon (ASM) anticyclone provides an efficient pathway for the upward transport of anthropogenic pollutants into the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). However, in-situ measurements of key trace gases in the UTLS remain scarce over the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (TP), a core region of the ASM anticyclone. In August 2019, the first AirCore observations over the northern TP were conducted, providing high-resolution vertic…
New evidence for CH 4 enhancement in the upper troposphere associated with the Asian summer monsoon
The Asian summer monsoon (ASM) region is a key region transporting air to the upper troposphere (UT), significantly influencing the distribution and concentration of trace gases, including methane (CH 4 ), an important greenhouse gas. We investigate the seasonal enhancement of CH 4 in the UT over the ASM region, utilizing retrievals from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), model simulations and in-situ measurements. Both the AIRS data and mo…
Lagrangian inversion of anthropogenic CO 2 emissions from Beijing using differential column measurements
We estimated CO 2 emissions from the Beijing region of China using differential ground-based observations of the column-averaged dry air mole fractions of CO 2 ( Δ X C O 2 , obs ; urban minus upwind background column observations) in winter (1 November 2020–1 March 2021). Beijing is one of the most world’s populated cities and the CO 2 emissions from this region contain large uncertainties in different bottom-up anthropogenic inventories. Differe…
Near-real-time monitoring of global CO2 emissions reveals the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting human activities, and in turn energy use and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. Here we present daily estimates of country-level CO 2 emissions for different sectors based on near-real-time activity data. The key result is an abrupt 8.8% decrease in global CO 2 emissions (−1551 Mt CO 2 ) in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. The magnitude of this decrease is larger than during previous ec…
Aerosol variations in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere over the Tibetan Plateau
Satellite measurements and model simulations indicate the existence of the Asian tropopause aerosol layer (ATAL)—an enhanced aerosol layer in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) associated with the Asian summer monsoon (ASM)—although it has rarely been evidenced by snapshots of balloon-borne in situ measurements. To better understand how the ATAL evolves, a portable optical particle counter (POPS) onboard a stratospheric balloon w…
