  • Trends and controls on water-use efficiency of an old-growth coniferous forest in the Pacific Northwest

Open Access•Yueyang Jiang, Christopher J Still et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

At the ecosystem scale, water-use efficiency (WUE) is defined broadly as the ratio of carbon assimilated to water evaporated by an ecosystem. WUE is an important aspect of carbon and water cycling and has been used to assess forest ecosystem responses to climate change and rising atmospheric CO 2 concentrations. This study investigates the influence of meteorological and radiation variables on forest WUE by analyzing an 18 year (1998–2015) half-h…

  • Tree-Ring Carbon Isotope Records from the Western Oregon Cascade Mountains Primarily Record Summer Maximum Temperatures

    Open Access•Christopher J Ratcliff, Steven L Voelker et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2018

Here we examine climatic influences on inter-annual variation in latewood tree growth (i.e. ring-width indices, RWILW) and stable-carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13CLW) from 1950 to 2013 at two SNOTEL snowpack monitoring sites in the Oregon Cascade Mountains. Douglas-fir and mountain hemlock trees were sampled at the lower and upper elevation sites where annual peak snow water equivalent (SWE) averaged 467 and 1128 mm, respectively. RWILW chronol…

  • Deglacial Hydroclimate of Midcontinental North America

    Open Access•Steven L Voelker, Michael C Stambaugh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

During the last deglaciation temperatures over midcontinental North America warmed dramatically through the Bølling-Allerød, underwent a cool period associated with the Younger-Dryas and then reverted to warmer, near modern temperatures during the early Holocene. However, paleo proxy records of the hydroclimate of this period have presented divergent evidence. We reconstruct summer relative humidity (RH) across the last deglacial period using a m…
