A pragmatic typology of WhatsApp sticker functions
This study investigates the pragmatic functions of custom WhatsApp stickers, with a particular focus on those integrating images and text. Building on prior research, the study develops a classification scheme that highlights three core dimensions: the sender’s intention, the sticker-centred act of communication, and the audience’s interpretation of its meaning. The analysis is based on a corpus of 598 user-generated stickers from Spanish WhatsAp…
Humour in times of mourning
This study investigates the use of humorous memes in times of mourning from a contrastive English-Spanish perspective. The study of the discourse of death and grief is receiving increasing attention mainly due to the changes brought about by the migration of mourning practices to the internet. Previous research has revealed that mourning personal losses or those of public figures is not exempt from including negative evaluations of the deceased o…
Pragmatics and the Internet
Pragmatics analyzes the use of language in context and the gap existing between speakers' intended interpretations and the literal meaning coded in the utterances that they produce to accomplish their communicative goals. When applied to Internet communication, researchers have to consider a number of factors. These include the role of interfaces in the eventual (un)successful outcome of online interactions, the differences between online and off…
Interactive Patterns in Humorous Messaging Interactions
In Yus (2022a, 2022b), a corpus of humorous interactions on the messaging app WhatsApp was analysed, aiming to isolate their recurrent turn-taking variations. The analysis yielded several patterns depending on the quality of the first turn in the messaging conversation: (a) humorous text, (b) humorous text plus emoji, (c) non-humorous text, (d) non-humorous text plus emoji, (e) image, (f) image plus humorous text; (g) image plus non-humorous text…

Pragmatics of humour in memes in Spanish
In this paper the discourse of a specific type of meme in Spanish, the image macro, is analysed, together with several ways in which memes generate humorous effects. Two main areas are addressed: (a) how humour arises from the processing of the text in the meme (decoding of the text plus further inferential enrichment); and (b) how humour relies on specific combinations of the text and the image in the meme. The pragmatic framework used in the an…
Smartphone Communication
This book offers a unique model for understanding the cognitive underpinnings, interactions and discursive effects of our evolving use of smartphones in everyday app-mediated communication, from text messages and GIFs to images, video and social media apps. Adopting a cyberpragmatics framework, grounded in cognitive pragmatics and relevance theory, it gives attention to how both the particular interfaces of different apps and users' personal attr…

Pragmatics and humor in Spanish research
In this chapter, some applications of pragmatics to humorous discourses in Spanish are reviewed and exemplified. After an introductory section covering general issues of humor in Spanish, I present an analysis of how jokes and puns in Spanish are inferred and humorous effects are obtained. One section also addresses stand-up comedy monologues in Spanish, the translation of humor from/into Spanish, and the analysis of humor in verbal-visual discou…
Bonding across Chinese social media
This paper explores social bonding in language play via the construction of ‘Chinese character (annotation)’ on two major social media platforms ( Sina Weibo and WeChat ) in China. The Chinese characters and their bracketed annotations under study, despite their one-to-one matching in sequence, never match each other either in meaning or in pronunciation. They convey a sense of playfulness among social media users who may be acquaintances or stra…

Contextual constraints and non-propositional effects in WhatsApp communication
Propositional attitude, affective attitude and irony comprehension
According to relevance theory, irony comprehension invariably entails the identification of some opinion or thought (echo) and the identification of the speaker’s dissociative attitude. In this paper, it is argued that it is also essential for hearers to identify not only that propositional attitude, but also the affective attitude that the speaker holds towards the source of this echo so that an optimally relevant interpretive outcome is achieve…

Not All Emoticons Are Created Equal
Text deformation and emoticon use have become pervasive in today's computer-mediated communication. In this article, emoticons are analysed from a pragmatic, relevance-theoretic perspective, which entails determining the extent to which emoticons contribute to the eventual relevance of the information communicated by the text typed on the keyboard. Eight pragmatic functions are proposed, which correspond to the different ways in which emoticons s…
Towards a cross-cultural pragmatic taxonomy of insults
The aim of this paper is to explain the use of insults from a relevance-theoretic perspective. To that end, our analysis takes into consideration four variables that, we believe, play a major role in how insults are produced an interpreted: (a) the conventional or innovative nature of the insult; (b) the underlying intentionality (to offend, to praise or to establish/maintain social bonding; (c) the in/correct interpretation of the insult, and (d…
Cyberpragmatics
“Cyberpragmatics” was coined by Yus (2001, 2010a) as an attempt to study Internet‐mediated communication (IMC) from a cognitive pragmatics point of view and, more specifically, from the theoretical framework of relevance theory (Sperber & Wilson, 1995), although other theoretical approaches were also addressed when appropriate.

Cyberpragmatics
Cyberpragmatics is an analysis of Internet-mediated communication from the perspective of cognitive pragmatics. It addresses a whole range of interactions that can be found on the Net: the web page, chat rooms, instant messaging, social networking sites, 3D virtual worlds, blogs, videoconference, e-mail, Twitter, etc. Of special interest is the role of intentions and the quality of interpretations when these Internet-mediated interactions take pl…

Relevance
The present volume on relevance theory contains interesting insights on both inherent aspects of the theory and possible applications to varied pragmatic interests (apparently) as distant as grammar or politeness. The following bibliography is an attempt to provide the reader with as many references on relevance theory as possible, and to carry out this attempt according to several relevance-theoretical headings grouping different objects of prag…

Grammar
Relevance theory (Sperber and Wilson, 1986) provides an interesting cognitive framework for the study of how interpretation takes place in face-to-face interaction. However, the applicability of this theory extends beyond conversation and this article also outlines how grammar can be analysed from a relevance-theoretic perspective. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of different studies of grammatical aspects of sentences which ov…
