Approaches to Focusing on Employability in the Sociology Major
In this conversation, we argue that undergraduate sociology programs should take career readiness seriously either by developing courses that are explicit in their career-related goals or by integrating career exploration and related learning across the curriculum. By doing so, sociology programs can meet students’ needs for meaningful careers that contribute to societal well-being while at the same time maintaining a rigorous and critical core s…
Blaming the Victim, the Bystander, the Perpetrator, or the Institution
Guided by theories of socialization and just policy theory, we explore how students allocate blame when sexual assault prevention programming hypothetically varies, net of the effects of evaluators' traits. Using a survey instrument containing a series of vignettes, we ask whether university students' (N = 254) perceptions of responsibility attributed to victims, perpetrators, bystanders, and university administrators varies by hypothetical progr…
Predicting Successful Evasion of Attempted Sexual Assault
The field of sexual violence prevention is based largely on implicit assumptions regarding individual-level skills and broader cultural beliefs and practices that predict victimization. As a consequence, recommendations for programming that addresses sexual assault, a problem with both structural and individual roots, remain underdeveloped. Research would benefit from an examination of the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors predicting effective pr…
Developments in Sexual Assault Resistance Education
Most sexual assault prevention focuses exclusively on primary prevention programs. Risk reduction strategies, however, have an equally important role to play in prevention efforts. By way of illustration, we provide efficacy data on a sexual assault protection program that incorporates both primary prevention and risk reduction within a single seminar. These data, which replicate previous program evaluations while adding two new cohorts of progra…
A New Model for Sexual Assault Protection
Sexual assault self-protection programs often address either broad educational goals (e.g., alcohol awareness, gender, and safety) or are restricted to the practice of violent hands-on self-protection techniques. Enrollment is almost entirely restricted to female audiences, in spite of a high risk of assault among gay men. We describe the development of Elemental, a sexual assault protection program, wherein we undertook a sociologically grounded…
I've Kept It That Way on Purpose
Although more attention has been given in recent years to adolescents' influences on family dynamics after divorce, little is still known about the forms such agency takes, the rationales and structures that shape it, or its consequences. This study is an examination of adolescents' reports of the ways in which they manage negative aspects of their relationships with their parents. In-depth interviews with fifty adolescents from divorced or separ…
Nonresident Father Involvement, Social Class, and Adolescent Weight
Body weight issues disproportionately affect children with nonresident fathers. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, the authors investigate the relationship between nonresident father involvement and adolescent weight, specifically adolescents' risk of being underweight, overweight, and obese. The results show that nonresident father involvement is associated with adolescent weight and that the effect varies acco…
Stepfather Involvement and Adolescents’ Disposition Toward Having Sex
Different factors influence males' and females' motivations to engage in sex, and intervention programs need to be structured with these differences in mind. Programs that work toward cultivating close relationships between stepfathers and stepchildren will likely be most effective for males, while programs that highlight the important role that mothers play in making clear their beliefs about the acceptability of teenagers' sexual activity will …
Nonresident Fathering and School Failure
Does involvement by nonresident fathers affect adolescents' propensity to remain in school? If so, is some involvement necessarily better than none, and are changes in involvement with time associated with changes in the odds of school failure? What aspects of involvement matter the most? This study uses data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to show that nonresident fathers' involvement and increases in this involvement o…
Nonresident Fathers' Involvement and Adolescents' Smoking
Although prior research has shown that adolescents from divorced and separated households are more likely to smoke than their peers from intact families, few studies have addressed factors that may minimize this risk, such as the role of involvement by nonresident fathers. A sample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) is used to examine the longitudinal effects of nonresident fathers'involvement, changes in invol…
Absent Parents Are More Than Money
Numerous studies have failed to detect any long-term consequences of involvement by absent parents on their children's well-being beyond the effects of financial transfers. However, many of these studies often narrowly define involvement as parent-child contact and do not address possible joint effects between parental involvement and other variables. In this study, the author used a sample of 269 cases from two waves of the National Survey of Fa…
