    Open Access•Svetlana Kharchenkova•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2026

When new markets are created for foreign cultural products, cultural intermediaries need to convince potential consumers of their value. To understand this process, this paper bridges cultural globalization literature with market studies in economic sociology, and investigates children’s picture books in China, where they were recently introduced in a socio-cultural environment not conductive to appreciating them. It argues that editors add so-ca…

    Open Access•Svetlana Kharchenkova, Olav Velthuis•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2018•Cited by: 20•References: 36

This article studies the role of judgment devices in the emergence of markets for singularities. In particular, it seeks to understand how specific judgment devices become dominant in resolving uncertainty within these markets. Building on Karpik’s seminal theory, we argue that institutional environments (e.g. government regulations, political economic factors, the level of informality within business environments) as well as the level of experti…

  • Official Art Organizations in the Emerging Markets of China and Russia

Svetlana Kharchenkova, Nataliya Komarova et al.•CHAPTER•Cosmopolitan Canvases•2015

This chapter explores why official art organizations—artists associations and art academies—which regulated artistic production in Soviet Russia and Maoist China, continue to survive despite changing environments and the development of art markets in these countries. This chapter observes path-dependent processes and instances of institutional complementarities that explain the resilience of institutional arrangements. In China, official art orga…
