Converging or diverging? Intra-party change in the Italian parties (2012–2024)
Measuring political representation in Italy
Do parties converge? An empirical analysis of party organizational and policy issue saliency change in Western Europe (1970–2010)
This article aims at assessing whether party organizational profiles and policy issue saliency converged in 7 European democracies (Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UK), from the 1970s to the 2010s. Building on the theoretical premises of the cartel party thesis and historical new-institutionalism, the paper argues that general tendencies in party policy issue saliency and organizational evolution driven by contextual f…
Removing the intermediaries? Patterns of intra-party organizational change in Europe (1970–2010)
Leaders and members in the Italian parties (1994-2018)
This article focuses on the evolution of the organizational profiles of Italian parties during the years of the so-called Second Republic. Most of the parties born at the beginning of the 1990s have undergone uncertain organizational development processes: in only a few cases has it been possible to observe organizational consolidation. Specifically, we will analyse how different parties have regulated the vertical distribution of power between o…
I love this game
In recent years, a growing body of literature has widely investigated the impact of role-playing simulations in teaching politics and international relations. While scholars agree that participating in simulations is helpful for the students in developing their skills, the evidence about benefits is more mixed. Moreover, the question whether all students—regardless of their demographic or academic background—benefit similarly from simulations rem…
Managing incoherence. Social democratic parties and transnational issues in Europe
Do political parties keep their promises? The coherence between parties’ ideology and policy output have always attracted scholarly interest. Moreover, the importance of political parties’ accountability has dramatically increased also because of the rise of populist parties. This paper aims at contributing to the current debate by investigating different phases: the electoral manifestoes, the framing on issues in parliament, the votes, and the w…
A reality check for students? How participating to the Model United Nations influences skills, IR perceptions, and perspectives on future career
Despite a growing number of studies on simulations and International Relations (IR), few analyses investigate how participating in a simulation affects students’ perceptions of relevant IR issues. In addition, almost none of the current analyses on role playing and IR investigate how the involvement in a simulation affects students’ views on university enrolment or future career. This article seeks to fill these gaps, addressing how students’ int…
The Italian party system’s three functional arenas after the 2018 election
The aim of this article is to assess to what extent the ‘change’ after the 2018 Italian election can be observed in the electoral, parliamentary and governmental arenas. We use the indicators of party ‘volatility’ and ‘innovation’ to measure the change in each arena. The time span is the period 1948–2018, with a specific focus on the time after the watershed election of 1994. In this respect, we have identified a crucial difference between the 19…
Students’ knowledge and perceptions of international relations and the ‘Model United Nations’
Party rules, party resources and the politics of parliamentary democracies
This article introduces the first findings of the Political Party Database Project, a major survey of party organizations in parliamentary and semi-presidential democracies. The project’s first round of data covers 122 parties in 19 countries. In this article, we describe the scope of the database, then investigate what it tells us about contemporary party organization in these countries, focusing on parties’ resources, structures and internal de…
Peace and war in the political discourse of Italian Marxist and post-Marxist parties
Culture-based explanations, which are still lacking in the Italian political science literature, help to interpret the effects that changing political identities have on national security politics. The purpose of this article is to offer a contribution to understanding the evolution of the Marxist and post-Marxist parties’ strategic culture from the bipolar to the post-1989 era in Italy. Notwithstanding the transformation of Italian defence polic…
