  • Nonlinear causality in Castells's network society

    Open Access•Bob Hodges, BOB HODGE•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2013•References: 17

In this article I consider Castells's network society trilogy as a key site for examining claims that globalization today is driven by a new paradigm, in which networks and digital technologies play a decisive role in producing revolutionary new forms of economics, politics, culture and society. To theorize this change I draw on a rich, explicit account of non-linear causal processes found in far-from-equilibrium cybernetics, foregrounding the al…

  • Critical Incident Analysis and the Semiosphere

Open Access•Bob Hodges, BOB HODGE et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies Review•2011

In January 2007, media outlets across Australia reported the local court decision Police v Rose. Mr Rose pleaded guilty and the presiding magistrate recorded no conviction. This event sparked a 'butterfly effect' that culminated in legislative amendments changing the make-up of the body responsible for oversight of judges in New South Wales. Key players failed to observe the doctrine of the separation of powers; while others called for its observ…

  • What Was Postcolonialism

Mishra, Vijay Mishra et al.•ARTICLE•New Literary History•2005•Cited by: 7

This essay examines the "pastness" of postcolonial theory by locating it in the project of an "uncompleted" modernity. It argues that as a theoretical problematic "postcolonialism" seems to have lost two of its crucial "memories": the memory of lexicon (especially the etymology of the word "colony") and the memory of a revitalised understanding of the links between imperialism, labour and modernity. Invoking a reworking of a Marxist analytic that…

  • Feral Archaeology and the Atlantis Problem

    Bob Hodges, BOB HODGE•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2002•References: 5

This article uses a case study of a TV programme, Atlantis Uncovered, an archaeological programme debunking popular ideas of Atlantis and the ancient past, as an instance of a discursive paradox, or discursive pathology, in which defenders of traditional canons of scholarship (science and rationality) decide they must go feral, fighting fire with fire, using the illogical and irrational methods of thought they attribute to what they perceive as t…

  • The Politics of Chinese Language and Culture

Richard King, Bob Hodges et al.•ARTICLE•Pacific Affairs•2000

An innovative text which adopts the tools of cultural studies to provide a fresh approach to the study of Chinese language, culture and society. The book tackles areas such as grammar, language, gender, popular culture, film and the Chinese diaspora and employs the concepts of social semiotics to extend the ideas of language and reading. Covering a range of cultural texts, it will help to break down the boundaries around the ideas and identities …
