  • Selecting dominant or rare tree species as habitat trees: Consequences for epiphyte diversity in temperate mountain forests

Open Access•Dina Emrich, Stefan Kaufmann et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2025

The retention of habitat trees, defined as large old trees saved from logging, is a key strategy for biodiversity conservation in production forests. Epiphytic bryophytes and lichens, which rely on the diverse microhabitats provided by large old trees, are expected to benefit significantly from this practice. The selection of habitat trees has become mandatory in some governmental biodiversity conservation strategies. While broadleaved trees are …

  • Iffy Endorsements

    Open Access•Magdalena Kaufmann, Stefan Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2022

Theories of imperatives differ in how they aim to derive the distributional and functional properties of this clause type. One point of divergence is how to capture the fact that imperative utterances convey the speaker’s endorsement for the course of events described. Condoravdi & Lauer (2017) observe that conditionals with imperative consequents (conditionalized imperatives, CIs) are infelicitous as motivations of advice against doing something…

  • The Limit Assumption

    Open Access•Stefan Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Semantics and Pragmatics•2017

In the literature on modality and conditionals, the Limit Assumption is routinely invoked to ensure that a simple definition of necessity (truth at all minimal worlds) can safely be substituted for a more complicated one (cf. Lewis’s and Kratzer’s definitions involving multiple layers of quantification). The Limit Assumption itself was formulated by David Lewis in 1973 and 1981, and while its plausibility has at times been debated on philosophica…

  • Epistemic particles and perfomativity

Open Access•Magdalena Kaufmann, Stefan Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Proceedings from Semantics and…•2012

The German discourse particles ‘ja’ and ‘doch’ both mark the information expressed by their host sentence as somehow given, obvious, or uncontroversial (McCready & Zimmermann 2011 call them ‘epistemic particles’). Two things are puzzling: (i) despite its ‘epistemic’ nature, ‘doch’ can appear in imperatives and with performative modals; (ii) despite their similarity, ‘ja’ is unacceptable in imperatives and forces a descriptive reading of modal ver…

  • Language and Ideology in Congress

    Open Access•Daniel Diermeier, Jean-François Godbout et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Political…•2012•Cited by: 53•References: 50

Legislative speech records from the 101st to 108th Congresses of the US Senate are analysed to study political ideologies. A widely-used text classification algorithm – Support Vector Machines (SVM) – allows the extraction of terms that are most indicative of conservative and liberal positions in legislative speeches and the prediction of senators’ ideological positions, with a 92 per cent level of accuracy. Feature analysis identifies the terms …

  • Zivile Sicherheit: Gesellschaftliche Dimensionen gegenwärtiger Sicherheitspolitiken

Open Access•Peter Zoche, Stefan Kaufmann et al.•BOOK•Zivile Sicherheit•2011

  • Modality and Evidentiality

Takao Gunji, Stefan Kaufmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2008

Linguistic expressions of modality and evidentiality have been the object of much active and exciting research for many years, but continue to pose challenges in all areas of semantic theory. Key aspects of their behaviour at the syntax–semantics interface, such as interactions with quantifiers and other operators or the calculation of modal implicatures triggered in embedding contexts, are not yet fully understood. Likewise, both the semantic in…

  • Classifying Party Affiliation from Political Speech

Bei Yu, Stefan Kaufmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Information Technology…•2008•Cited by: 16•References: 2

In this article, we discuss the design of party classifiers for Congressional speech data. We then examine these party classifiers' person-dependency and time-dependency. We found that party classifiers trained on 2005 House speeches can be generalized to the Senate speeches of the same year, but not vice versa. The classifiers trained on 2005 House speeches performed better on Senate speeches from recent years than on older ones, which indicates…

  • Conditional Truth and Future Reference

    Stefan Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2005

This paper proposes a compositional model-theoretic account of the way the interpretation of indicative conditionals is determined and constrained by the temporal and modal expressions in their constituents. The main claim is that the tenses in both the antecedent and the consequent of an indicative conditional are interpreted in the same way as in isolation. This is controversial for the antecedents of predictive conditionals like ‘If he arrives…

  • On the Lumping Semantics of Counterfactuals

Makoto Kanazawa, Stefan Kaufmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2005

Kratzer (1981) discussed a naïve premise semantics of counterfactual conditionals, pointed to an empirical inadequacy of this interpretation, and presented a modification—partition semantics—which Lewis (1981) proved equivalent to Pollock's (1976) version of his ordering semantics. Subsequently, Kratzer (1989) proposed lumping semantics, a different modification of premise semantics, and argued it remedies empirical failings of ordering semantics…

  • Modality and Temporality

Cleo Condoravdi, Stefan Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2005

The present collection addresses a number of issues in the semantic interpretation of modal and temporal expressions. Despite the variety the papers exhibit both in the selection of topics and the choice of formal frameworks, they are interconnected through several overarching themes that are at the centre of much ongoing research. The purpose of this brief introduction is to put the papers into context and draw the reader's attention to some of …
