    Open Access•Myrto Aristidou, Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert•ARTICLE•Convergence The International…•2024

The rapidly evolving nature of emerging technologies renders artworks made using such technologies a challenging category of objects to be handled by institutions. This paper presents real scenarios of how art made with Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) is acquired, exhibited and finally preserved by museums and art institutions, presenting a clear picture of a particular period. Though an extensive body of literature and studies de…

  • The Ledra Palace Hotel and the ‘difficult history’ of modern Cyprus

Open Access•Antigone Heraclidou, Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert•ARTICLE•Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies•2022•Referências: 1

This paper explores the extent to which the recent turbulent history of Cyprus is reflected in an emblematic building, the Ledra Palace Hotel. The hotel is situated on Nicosia's buffer zone, the Green Line that, since 1964, has divided the island into Greek Cypriot and Turkish sectors. Since its establishment in 1949 the Ledra Palace has been the background of the country's key historical events. In this paper, the Ledra Palace is analysed as an …

  • Tracking the Loving Gaze

    Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert, Omiros Panayides•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2021•Referências: 3

Tracking the Loving Gaze is a futile attempt to follow, map and capture the way cherished personal photographs are viewed. The authors asked 30 survey subjects to use an eye tracker while looking at a preselected photograph that held a special meaning for them. The raw visual data from this process—heat maps, focus maps and scan paths—became the foundation of a body of work that includes darkroom prints, short videos and a limited-edition artist …

  • Photographic Ecosystems and Archives

    Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert•ARTICLE•Photographies•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

This article offers a theoretical framework for understanding the social structures embedded in photographic archives. More specifically, it examines the ways in which archives, with their multiple physical and online presences, function within various photographic ecosystems. I propose that there exist at least three different but interconnected types of archive biographies — social, material and value biographies — and argue that these biograph…

  • Photographing in the Art Museum

    Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert•ARTICLE•Visitor Studies•2017

There is an animated debate in popular media about whether or not photography should be allowed in art museums. However, there is limited research that examines how visitors themselves feel about visitor photography and the reasons why they choose to take (or not take) photographs in museums. This research, conducted at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, uses semistructured, in-depth interviews and photo elicitation with…

    Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert, Alexandra Bounia et al.•ARTICLE•Visitor Studies•2014

This article examines the relation between museums exhibiting sacred objects, visitors, and politics. More specifically, it explores the reasons why a minority group of visitors might resist, or even reject, the institutional power of a museum. St. Barnabas Icon Museum, located in the northern part of Cyprus, and a minority group of its visitors-the Women of St. Barnabas-serve as our case study. The two main communities of the island (Greek Cypri…

  • War Museums and Photography

    Open Access•Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert, Alexandra Bounia•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2012

The use of photographs in museums can reveal how the perceived transparency of photography and the authority of the museum interact with the subjectivity and the political construction of historical narratives. This paper focuses on the medium of photography in five war-related museums in Cyprus and examines how it is used in the context of these museums as a means to construct strong narratives by assuming the role of factual information and by …

This article offers a theoretical overview of how diverse disciplines, such as cultural studies, sociology, philosophy of art, education, and marketing, have contributed to the evolving conceptualization of museum audiences over the past 50 years. Audience research has moved through different paradigms. Every shift in the way audiences are viewed unavoidably influences the way museum professionals view themselves, their role, and the way they int…

Within a discussion of the existing literature, it is argued that both socio-cultural and individual factors influence museum perceptions and visitation decisions. Using in-depth interviews with 60 participants, eight different ways of perceiving the art museum have been identified. These are…
