The Influence of British Capital on the Western Range-Cattle Industry
It is my purpose in this paper to sketch briefly one heretofore ignored facet in American economic history: the influence of British capital, knowledge, and livestock in the growth, development, and eventual decline of the Western range-cattle industry during that colorful, though all too frequently disastrous, period between the American Civil War and the end of the century. Although the locale of this story would seem to confine its interest an…

Boom Town Banker — Central City Colorado, 1880
Thirty miles west of Denver, in narrow, boulder-strewn Clear Creek Canyon, high on the eastern frontal range of the Colorado Rockies, the ghostlike remains of Central City stand amid the monuments of a golden past — mute, decaying mine shafts, bleak, windowless stamp mills, and abandoned gold lodes littered with the broken and rusty debris of many lost hopes and a few fulfilled dreams. Here in the “Golden Mile” between the silent works of Black H…

Pueblo Indian Land Grants of the "Rio Abajo," New Mexico
The Supreme Court of the United States, in deciding a case of extreme importance to the Pueblo Indians, was forced to admit that erroneous information with regard to the Indians had been given to the court in a previous case, leading to a decision which proved highly costly, in money and land, to the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. This study is made, therefore, in an attempt to supply, at least partially, the need so often expressed by attorneys, …
